1989 Vanagon GL Westfalia   Price: $30000
I am the third owner of this van, previously owned by a family member. it is a manual 4 speed with no factory AC, however I have fabricated a 1/2" Lexan panel that neatly installs in the drivers window opening and hangs a window AC for camping, no external support used. Mileage was 39k when I acquired and 46k now. It had been stored for 15+ years. The 1 1/2 year refurbishing project is as follows.
New fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel level sending unit, fuel tank reseal kit, fuel pump/injector relays, and all rubber fuel lines. New brake master cylinder, rear wheel brake cylinders, braided stainless brake lines, clutch master cylinder, brake light switch, shoes and pads(Wagner), and rebuilt front calipers. New upper and lower ball joints(Moog), tie rod ends(Moog), rack and pinion bellows(Moog), CV joint boots, CV were disassembled, inspected, repacked. New S&S exhaust system, required removal of cylinder heads for exhaust stud extraction, allowing inspection for pitting and cracks. New cylinder bottom o-rings, top gaskets, and rubber head seals were installed, cylinders were not pulled of pistons so as to not compromise ring seating. New coolant expansion tank, radiator baffle set, water pump, oil pressure switch(low/blue), intake manifold boots, thermostat housing(GoWesty), water pump to thermostat pipe(GoWesty), and most coolant hoses in the engine compartment. ALL windows, doors, hatch, tops, and exterior lighting/trim were removed. ALL interior was disassembled and removed. Van was fully primed and repainted in original color. Reassembly included ALL new seals, pop top tent(GoWesty), skylight(GoWesty), sink drain kit, new LP tank and regulator(GoWesty), ALL new cabinet tee moulding, new hatch struts, and the usual belts, plugs, wiper blades, etc. Stainless screws were used where possible on the exterior. a third brake light was added for safety. A Kenwood media receiver and Fosgate speakers were installed in the factory locations. A pair of auxiliary batteries are fitted behind the drivers seat and the radio, cig lighter, and interior lights are isolated to these batteries. The front hubs are converted to studs and both front and rear studs are T3 hardware. The van sits on Motegi 17"x7" wheels and Toyo Extensa HP 225-45-17 tires, this meets load rating requirements but keeps the overall height low enough to BARELY fit in a standard garage door. Wheel center caps are custom machined. No wheel spacers are used and all clearance is ok. Everything works on this van. Significant flaws are a crack in the right hi-beam headlight and a pencil size hole in the drivers seat upholstery. interior overall has very little wear.
