Rebuilt 1997 TDI inline-four paired with a 4-speed transaxle featuring taller 3rd and 4th gears. Bought on bringatrailer.com in March 2018 at 139k miles, but deploying with the Army soon so unfortunately no longer have a need.
4th owner. Past 10k miles has installed new tires, brakes, shocks, wheel bearings, and a solar system. The second owner acquired the car as a project after the original engine failed in 1992. Other updates include a new starter, slave cylinder, radiator, stainless coolant pipes, and CV joints. Clutch installed <3k miles ago in Iowa. Engine battery has under 200 miles on it. Professionally buffed and waxed at Scumbug Motor Repair Shop in Columbus, GA under 20 miles ago.
Outfitted with a North American High Top roof with custom external rack and is being sold in Georgia with a clear Carfax and clean Iowa title in my name.
The front clip, upper valance on the sliding door, and the exterior kitchen panel were repainted by previous owner during the refurbishment. Most of the seams were scraped, sandblasted, and resealed with 3M panel-weld and airbrushed the factory color. Slight rust in the seam on the front valance and a couple of spots on the rain gutters (pictured in album linked).
A 7-foot ARB awning is attached above the passenger side sliding door to provide shade and weather protection. Previous owner added the solar panels/charging system in late 2017. BFG KO2 tires, including a full size spare, are mounted to Mercedes CLK-style powder-coated wheels in the last 7k miles.
The kitchenette features a newer propane tank and regulator, 12-volt compressor refrigerator, and cork flooring. The previous owner added a 200-watt solar charging system with roof panels, 200 amp-hour house battery, Blue Sky solar controller with maximum power point tracking, and NOCO Genius Gen1 10-amp onboard battery charger. Standing height is approximately 6’8″.
The original owner parked the van when the original motor failed at 88k miles. Power is now supplied by a 1997 1.9-liter TDI inline-four paired with a rebuilt AA transaxle installed using the original bell housing and featuring taller third and fourth gears. The second owner completed the work by 2012, and approximately 20k miles have been added since.
A Vanagon diesel dash showing approximately 127k miles was added at the time of the engine swap and it currently shows 144,457 miles. Chassis mileage is believed to be approximately 105k.
