1954 rhd sunroof barndoor with a westy camping box Price: trade....
1954 rhd sunroof micro bus, with an original 1959 Westfalia camping box interior
I will consider a deal/px/trade to help make a deal work. I will also help with shipping my end if needed for an overseas buyer. I'm sure anyone who will be considering a transaction like this, will also be aware that the exchange rate to the pound has never been so good!!!
Please note, this bus will be sold as a standard height bus, using all its original running gear, it also will not be seen in this guise till the new owner chooses to.
For sale is our sunroof barndoor, 24d (228) micro bus, loading doors on the left, with sunroof, rhd.
We were lucky enough to acquire this cool bus out of a Luke at Terry's Beetles collection back in 2010, where it had sat for a number of years. It was complete (except for the rear seating), and could have been just tidied up and serviced to get road worthy again. It needed minimal welding as it was in such good shape for a 55 year old bus, some was done prior to us purchasing it and we completed what we needed..... ie. long sill, short sill, 1 side belly pan, jacking points, 1 dog leg.
The bus was originally delivered to the UK in October 1954 then later shipped out to Australia. There are a few pictures here on thesamba whilst being used out there.
Once we took possession of the bus, we removed all the original running gear for storage, had the underside pressure cleaned and primed and finished the welding that was required. We then set about building modified running gear from scratch as to not mess up the original parts. The bus then went of to Smiths of Cornwall to be painted back into its original colours of light beige/ beige brown (l75/l76). We then commissioned Neil Melliard of Pro Sign, to pinstripe the swage line as he has the steadiest hand and an eye for detail. The bus was then shipped to Graham Dean for the trimming. Graham installed the sunroof fabric in brown mohair, all the headlining was done in beige wool and carpeted the cab and the rear parcel shelf. Mike Rutherford trimmed the cab seat and door panels.
All the guys were used because they are good friends and have an eye for detail and a keen interest in busses.
The interior..... this bus would have had rear and middle bench seats for carrying passengers but as it did not come with any and my intention was to use it as a camper for my family and I, we came across this very rare and original Westfalia camping box. We went to a town called Passau, South East Germany, where we met the original owner, son and grandson. The grandfather explained he purchased the unit from Westfalia with a few camping accessories to use in his 1958 VW delivery van, whilst dating his now wife to go camping. He used the unit twice before putting it in his attic, from where we carried it out all those years later. The unit was in very good condition as you see here, all we had to do was remove the old collapsed foam from under the original cloth and replace. And yes it is still its original cloth!!
The unit is actually a lhd unit, which makes the table offset to the wrong side in a rhd bus and has the pressed badge on the wrong side.
Now the wording "holy grail" has been used in many other rare and unusual items in and out of the VW scene, some loosely and some have clarity.... according to barndoor.dk register, last updated 02/02/18 there were 982 known barndoors still in existence. The majority of these being taken up by kombis and panels. Now to get a true picture or the rarity of this bus.... the total number of barndoor delux microbus is 153 of which only 18 are rhd..... the total number or sunroof barndoors is 18 and of which only 4 are rhd..... so maybe with this interior, the wording "holy grail" may have some clarity!!
I have had this bus for nearly 10 years and we have travelled all over the UK and Europe, to VW events and holidays as a family. With my children being young and with this interior style, we were all able to sleep in the bus and comfortably too, but as normal children grow and for that reason we have not used the bus as much as we did. We were lucky enough to have won a few trophies with the bus over our travels, in the UK and Europe.
What is for sale? My bus is being returned to stock, all the running gear modification, will be removed and replaced with using all its original running gear it came with, front axle, steering, rear axle, 16" wheels and a period correct engine. All this will be cleaned up and serviced to be in good usable condition. Pictures of the original running gear inc.
Obviously with this add, we are only able to share 18 pictures, but I do have a a large file of pics and videos I can share with serious interested parties.
