Clean 1974 Thing, original paint survivor!   Price: $14,000

I am selling this vehicle for a friend. I am a reputable VW enthusiast, and all contact and business will be handled through me.

This is a 1974 Thing survivor that has been owned by same owner since 1990 and has been extremely well maintained, and was also featured in the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” with Will Smith. It has also competed and won awards in many VW shows.

The exterior is all original paint Sunshine Yellow except for the front drivers fender which was flawlessly resprayed 20 years ago and is hard to notice any difference. The body is very straight with perhaps a few minor dings but no major damage or signs of ever being in an accident, only a few “battle scars” from driving in the city. The paint is nice and very presentable.

There are no spots showing any rust or rot. The floors are solid with the battery tray having been coated with rust preventative several years ago so nothing to worry about. The rockers and corners all are solid with no rust.

The convertible top is a new unit from The Thing Shop with their upgraded and better reinforced frame, as the original frames were known for bending and cracking. The material is in beautiful shape with no tears or damage.

The interior is all original, with a few VDO gauges that have been added to monitor the vitals of the engine so that you may drive with peace of mind. (Oil pressure, oil temp, cyl head temp, and tach).

The front seats are the originals that have served their time and could use some freshening up, and currently have some store bought seat covers on them. The rear seat however is extremely clean with one little minor nick on it.

The dash is also nice and clean.

The engine is the original dual port that was built into a 1776 in the early 90’s. It has about 40k miles on it since the rebuild and runs great! Transmission also shifts great with no grinding or popping out of gear.

The brakes were gone through several years ago and still work perfect, but due to the age, for safety reasons I would recommend inspecting them. Ball joints were replaced a few years ago as well. The steering is also nice and tight and steers nice.

The Thing is currently registered and insured with a clean Title in owner’s name. Again, I am selling this for my good friend. The personal license plates “74 Kubel” also come with the car.

This is a very nice survivor Thing that would make a great addition to your VW collection, a daily driver, or even the perfect base for a full restoration if you are looking for a solid base to go that route, but honestly this car doesn’t need that and would be a shame to destroy the originality.

The owner would very much prefer to keep this car but the passing of his elderly mother and bills require selling it. He is asking $14,000 or best offer. That is a very fair and realistic price on today's Thing market for a dry and solid, good running, original California Thing.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a viewing or test drive, please contact me.

International buyers welcome! I can assist with shipping.

Thank you!
