1966 Westfalia SO42 Walkthru, Mostly OG Paint!   Price: Sale Pending
1966 Westfalia SO42 Walkthru Camper In Mostly Original Pearl White Paint!

Here is a very respectable, mostly original, impressively solid, and very user-friendly Westfalia Camper Bus with a known history.

Some of the many features to note include being a desirable factory Walkthru, mostly original interior, having the original 1500cc engine, very little rust, original jumpseat for the Walkthru is included as are the roof rack, the original child's cot that seems to be unused, a brand new German poptop canvas, and an original pedal pan, too.

Here is the known history of the Bus as written by the owner who is a well-known and long-time Volkswagen collector...

"Some history on this Bus: A little lady who was a graduate student at the University of Arkansas bought the Bus in 1966 from the Volkswagen dealer in Fayetteville, Arkansas via an inter-dealer swap from a dealer in Little Rock, Arkansas. It still has the original dealer sticker (Warden Volkswagen) on the rear hatch. The lady drove the Bus until about 1995, clocking some 130,000 miles on it. She was the ladies' volleyball coach at Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas, sometimes hauling her volleyball players to games in the Bus. She sold the Bus to a gentleman in Houston who had intentions of restoring it but did nothing for 8 years and left it sitting in his driveway in Houston for 8 years. The damp climate in Houston just about ruined the original paint and the wet caused some rot to form on the sill for the cargo doors. Other than this bit or rot there is limited if any rot on the chassis or floor. Other than surface rust on the belly there isn't any. The interior is super nice with everything there. Even the child's cot with the poles that has never been used. Original paint throughout in the interior is super nice. Most everything in the interior is original except the curtains which have been replaced, the front floor mat which is a new one from Wolfsburg West, and the Walkthru front seats which have been recovered with TMI original style. All running gear is original including the original engine which was rebuilt and has about 8,000 miles since rebuild. The tranny was rebuilt with all new bearings including the reduction boxes and has about 6,000 miles on it. It is a great little driver and will cruise easily with the stock 1500 original motor at about 55-60mph. It will make it up to 70 if you try hard."

The body is in impressively good and solid condition and is still wearing the majority of its original L87 Pearl White. The nose seems to have been resprayed long ago, the engine compartment was repainted by the current owner some years ago, there may be some old blends from long ago, but the vast majority is still wearing the original paint. All of the doors, decklid, apron, pointed end bumpers, and 14 inch Bus wheels are correct for the Bus. The only known significant spot of rust to note is the edge of the cargo door side rocker where the rubber seal channel has rotted through a bit. We have pics that clearly show the extent of it. Other than that, there's mostly just surface rust patina to the paint and undercarriage, consistent with 53 years of life, sun, and the previously mentioned time it spent in Houston. The Hehr camper windows were restored and look great. The original poptop canvas is ratty but a new German replacement comes with the Bus. Overall the body is pretty impressive for being unrestored, most guys would run it proudly just as it is, or it could easily polish out to a beautiful shiny patina if that's more what you enjoy.

The interior is very original, much nicer than most, and very complete, too. Details to note include the original paint, original mustard bed cushions that have some normal age-related staining and discoloration, the original Sapphire radio which isn't working (radio is 6 volts while the Bus has been converted to 12 volts), original wood paneling, the original 1966 Westfalia id plate is intact, the original Westfalia cargo flooring is still present, as well as the original icebox still being in the Bus, too. As previously mentioned the curtains were replaced as were the front seat covers. It presents well and is totally enjoyable for a Camper to actually use.

Mechanically the Bus features the original 1500cc single port engine with about 8,000 miles on rebuild, the stock reduction box transaxle was rebuilt about 6,000 miles ago, the electrical was converted to 12 volts, and it is a driver. The odometer currently shows just over 41,000 and it is believed to have 141,000 total miles on it.

Plainly and simply, I do not expect this Bus to last! Thanks!
