1987 Weekender Beauty Price: 29500
This 1987 Weekender came into my life several years ago as a life long local southern California rust free van. It was straight as an arrow and as rust free as they get. Unfortunately the paint was badly burnt from many years of life under the relentless sun. It was also running on only three cylinders and needed a fair amount of mechanical work. I took it under my wing and slowly restored it.
I've never been a big fan of the Maroon vans and so I decided to do a color change. This was not your ordinary color change however. I completely took apart the van to do it. All doors off. Removed the entire interior (including the dash etc.). The body was stripped down and repainted with PPG paint in VW's Tornado red. A color never offered on a camper in the USA. We did it right. All the door jambs and even the interior of the doors. All of the interior of the van. The only place that you can still see the original color is in the engine compartment. I have before and during photos of all the paint work. I painted the top portion of the poptop bright silver to try to reduce some solar gain.
After that I reassembled the van using new parts where ever they were needed. All new window rubber and door seals where used. New front door panels and sliding door panels where installed. I used a new 3 window tent from NorthWesty that is made from Sunbrella. I updated the bumpers.
After that I rebuilt the engine with parts from Rocky Jennings in WA state. It's now a 2.2. Lost of other work as well. Please see the list below-
Mechanical work in the last 2500 miles-
Engine rebuild- Rocky Jennings rods, pistons, cam, lifter and ratio rockers, oil pump, New AMC heads with 3 angle valve job. Fully balanced.
All new fuel lines with GoWesty aluminium fuel rails.
All external steel engine parts powdercoated.

All new coolant system installed. Everything is new except the coolant lines up to the front heater core. Main heater hoses front the rear replaced. All fittings. New stainless steel coolant tower and aluminium thermostat housing. New stainless steel main coolant pipes. All coolant hoses new. New radiator.
GoWesty instrument cluster foil kit added.
New Pioneer deck installed with bluetooth and hands free.
Double USB power in dash
Main battery disconnect switch
2" receiver hitch
triple rain gutters on poptop
Interior LED strip lights added under both curtain tracks
New 16" Wheels and tires (proper load rated Continental tires) have about 500 miles on them
I've gone over the rest of the Van and made sure everything else is in good shape. I've replaced what it needed as far and the suspension was concerned. The steering rack is dry. The trans is dry and shows no signs of any issues at all. I've flushed it and refilled it with Swepco. The brakes are all in good working order. At this time the van shows no signs of any mechanical problems at all and it runs and drives really nice.
Here is what is left to do-
Power mirror adjusters are not working
I never recharged the AC after I put the van back together. I don't know if it will need other work or not. I installed new green R134a O-rings where I had things apart (condenser, evaporator housing etc.).
