1953 Barndoor Kombi Project in OG paint! Price: PENDING
Offered for sale is my Type 23A Barndoor Kombi project ...….
£16k GBP including many quality new repair panels:
This bus rolled out of the Wolfsburg factory in June 1953 wearing just it's primer. It was delivered straight to Scania-Vabis, Sweden where, like so many early Swedish buses, the dealer applied the 2-tone blue paint job that it still wears today; albeit now accentuated with a nice dose of "forest patina".
First sold to a Mr John Eriksson in the city of Västerås, on the shore of Lake Mälaren in central Sweden, it subsequently passed through two more owners before being taken off the road in 1967 and parked in the forest where it was eventually rediscovered and rescued in the early 2010's.
Imported to the UK a couple of years ago, the kombi has been the subject of some work already and now boasts a nice, solid, straight chassis, on top of which the body has been braced on an internal jig with the rust chopped out ready to go. The b-posts have already been replaced with new KlassicFab items and a new lower front bulkhead is tacked in position. The rear firewall / parcel shelf / wheel arch section is removed for repair but comes with the bus, and the roof has undergone some straightening work although more is required once the bus is structurally sound again.
The short side panel was the worst part of this kombi, and it has now been removed, but a replacement Autocraft item is included. Likewise, the bottom of the long side has been removed and a new, full barndoor long side is included in the sale. The front panel has also been removed for repair but is welded back in place; albeit still needing upper a-post replacement and lower panel repairs.
Other areas already cut out ready for repair are lower rear corners, (new panels included), battery tray panels, (new panels included), deck lid hanger, (new panels included), cargo floor, (new panels included), lower bulkhead, (new panels included), X-section front wheel arches, (new panels included), front windscreen, (new panels included), front gutter sections, (new panels included). On top of this I've included lower cargo door bottoms, front "above cab door" sections, over-trans ribbed section, complete set of outriggers, complete set of jacking point, etc, etc.
The roof is super solid and will be easy to straighten. Rust is limited to the gutter, and a spare new section is, of course, included in the sale :-)
Both original cab doors and door tops, both original cargo doors, the original front bumper, original rear valance, and a nice decklid in matching OG paint, are all included in this sale. The correct '53 style dash in primer is also included, and both rear pop outs are still there with their rare, early style latches. It's getting very difficult to find projects still wearing this much original paint and this barndoor could really be a gem once fixed up and back on the road.
Currently sat on a beetle front beam and a late beetle gearbox, shod in late, 4 stud wheels, a really nice original barndoor beam is also included in the sale, along with the early beetle spindles required to lower and narrow this front end in one easy hit, (a lot of American and Swedish barndoors are lowered / narrowed using this tried and tested method). Handbrake, pedals, steering column, steering column bracket, steering box, steering box mount chassis section, (new), and more are also included.
If you're after an early, original paint, barndoor project, then this is the one for you. A lot of the hard work has already been done for you, and with a smaller amount of blending than most buses require these days, you'll be able to build a killer original paint patina ride. Alternatively, the individual 2-tone blue, dealer paint polishes up amazingly and you could easily build a beautiful, stock, survivor barndoor. The choices are yours and the scope is there to do something special with this early, non rear bumper, backward style speedo, early style pop-out side window catches, original paint, Swedish barndoor kombi.
I have the original Swedish registration documents for this kombi, documenting it's history and listing every owner from new, as well as the original registration plate from the front bumper.
The bus is also NOVA'd, already on the UK HMRC system, and ready to register in the UK once built, or to export anywhere in the world as it stands today.
We all know that 2020 sucks. How about building this for Hessisch Oldendorf 2021 and putting a smile back on your face!!
This bus represents truly great value for money, (just do the maths on all those new quality panels!), but if your budget just won't stretch to £16k GBP, then I can do you a cheaper deal without the new panels included; just ask!
Feel free to contact me by PM, email or phone at any time if you wish to discuss the bus, request more details, or to talk pounds, shillings and pence.
Always happy to chat .........
If you need more photos then I have plenty. Try these for size ……….
I am based in Somerset, UK, and the bus is available to view at any time. I can also assist with shipping worldwide.
