1972 VW Bus Westfalia Camper Pop Top Price: 32500
1972 VW Bay Window Bus Westfalia Camper For Sale
Wonderful Westy camper bus. Built engine, transmission, and completely gone through, mechanically. Ready to be taken out and driven anywhere. It has been upgraded almost everywhere.
The engine is a fresh, mild performance 2.0 Liter build. It has forged Mahle pistons, mild Web camshaft, dual 40mm Weber IDF carburetors (jetted with a wideband sensor), a $550 stainless steel performance muffler etc. It has a custom installed remote oil cooler with integral fan and thermostat, as well as an oversized, remote oil filter. Electronic ignition. No expense spared to have a powerful and reliable engine. This one is a pleasure to drive on hills and in traffic plenty of power to accelerate up to speed or keep up.
The transmission received a similar rebuild and regear from Arizona Transaxle. It has a slightly taller ring and pinion, which makes 1st gear useable (not the super low stump puller it used to be), but with the much greater power of the engine, can cruise comfortably at 65-70mph if you want. Rebuilt axle shafts. New wheel bearings and brakes all around. New battery.
The headlights are upgraded H4 units, new turn signal switch and ignition tumbler. The interior is excellent. Newer upholstery, inertia reel 3 point seatbelts. The pop top tent is a newer 3 window unit.
It has brand new all terrain tires and alloy wheels it steers and handles much, much better than the stock 14 wheels. The rear shocks are upgraded to overload coilovers. They don't affect the normal ride much, but allow loading it up for camping without have the rear squat down a lot. The steering box is very good little play!
Everything on this Bus is a pleasure to drive and to use. It has some poor paint and bodywork done in the past, even though most people think it looks great (see closeup pics for details). There are details in the interior that aren't perfect as well. Being a Colorado Bus for many years, it is rust free. It has less than 2,000 miles since being mechanically gone through, but a health issue means it didn't get used much, hence the sale. In my opinion, this could be a daily driver for an air-cooled VW person, easily. It could also be used for long trips easily.
This is the last of the Early Bay window buses a 1972 so it has front disc brakes, the larger Type 4 engine (now built even larger), and the more attractive bumpers and low front turn signals. What I love about vehicles without perfect cosmetics, is that you don't feel bad using them. Getting them dirty or driving them in the woods on a gravel road. You WILL be having people come up to you to fawn over it at gas stops, but you don't have to worry about a rock chip, etc. People always ask if you can fly in and drive it home. There are never any guarantees, but this one is about as safe as you can get for that situation. I'd drive it cross country tomorrow.
I have receipts for $30,000 in work performed on the Bus in the last few years. I also have the original owners and isntruction manuals and ORIGINAL IMPORT PAPERWORK!! From the ship that it was delivered to port on!! How cool is that?
You could spend just as much on a Bus that needs serious work, or even more on one that isn't as usable or reliable.
