Repaired MAP Sensor for '74-76 d-jetronic 914/4   Price: $225
Here is an original MAP (Pressure) sensor from a d-jetronic 1975 914/4 2.0 L. I replaced this decades ago with a new one from Bosch ($350, IIRC!), when they were still available. Replacement was necessary because the diaphram in this one had failed. I have saved these parts in the hope that they might be useful to someone else someday, when I could make replacement diaphrams.

Here's what I have:
Bosch no.: 0 280 100 043
VW/Porsche no.: 039 906 051

I have not yet managed to make replacement diaphrams, but I have a number of more common VW Type 3 MAP sensors that I could steal a good diaphram from. I can replace this diaphram and properly recalibrate this sensor. I have been doing MAP sensor recalibrations for years, for VW Type 3s.

The d-jet MAP sensor is a transformer with a moving core that changes the mutual inductance. To do a calibration, I compare a known good sensor and the sensor to be calibrated side by side. I feed the same electrical pulses into the primaries of each MAP sensor while simultaneously applying varying amounts of vacuum to each of them. This mimics the way these sensors are used in the d-jet FI. I then monitor the secondary outputs on a dual trace oscilloscope. The matching is complete when the outputs match over a full range of vacuum. This method is incredibly sensitive and I can easily see changes of 1/16 turn of any of the adjustments. FYI, there are 3 separate, and interacting, adjustments in this family (with diaphram) of d-jet MAP sensors.

The last photo shows my setup for recalibrating Bosch d-jetronic MAP sensors.

I charge $75 just to recalibrate a MAP sensor w/diaphram. For the versions without diaphram, the charge is only $50.

Here's the catch: In order to do a proper recalibration, I need a known good MAP sensor of this same part number to match it to. I have NOS sensors for all the VW Type 3 applications and many for VW Type 4 models, but, unfortunately, I don't have another MAP sensor of this Porsche number.

So here's what we can do. If you can send me a known good MAP sensor of this same part number, I will use it as my "standard" to calibrate this one and return both to you. The recalibrated sensor will also get a new O-ring. This sensor originally came riveted together, but I will add Helicoils and new screws to make it user serviceable.

Using your sensor as a standard does not risk changing its calibration in any way. I will do all this for $225 plus return shipping. If you have a d-jet MAP sensor with a bad diaphram that you'd like me to fix, the price would be the same. I can do that while retaining the original calibration.

If you want your "calibration standard" MAP sensor cleaned up inside and out at the same time, plus a new O-ring, add $25. Make that $35 if the sensor you send is riveted. Again, I can do this with no risk of altering the factory calibration.

Return shipping, via insured and carefully packed USPS Priority Mail, adds another $28. Local pickup in Madison, WI adds 5.5% sales tax, but no shipping charge.

I understand that anyone with a 914/4 that this fits is likely to be concerned about sending off their perfectly good, and valuable, pressure sensor, to a complete stranger. I encourage you to post a message on any of the samba Type 3 forums asking for references on Jim Adney. You could also check me out on the VW Type 3 email list, where I am more active. The Type 3 list is free, but you'd have to sign up to participate.

I can assure you that your only risk will be in the shipping, but I have never had a problem with insured USPS Priority Mail.

Questions? Feel free to email me, and thanks for reading.
