94/92mm Forged 4032 pistons done right by Icon Price: $440
|
I currently have 94b's and one set of 94a's and one set of 92b's in stock as of 12/17/23.
For a long time I have complained that other than the Mahle/Cima pistons most aftermarket VW forged piston are the 2618 alloy, why? Because they require large piston to wall clearance which have serious downsides for most applications. They are noisy when the engine is cold, The 2618 material has a thermal expansion rate that is higher than the 4032 alloy. This higher expansion rate can also cause piston scoring/damage if the piston gets too hot for the piston to wall clearance. For the air cooled engine this is more of a concern with its limited cooling capacity and limited temperature control regulation. Overheating the engine is much more likely to cause piston and cylinder damage when the 2618 is used over the 4032.
Why the heavy use of the 2618 alloy? This alloy simplifies the manufacturing process which benefits the maker and not the user. What are the advantages of the 2618? If your running large amount of boost or nitrous oxide the 2618 will be less likely to crack but for 95% of us they are the wrong choice. Also, if the engine is allowed to have severe ping/detonation the 2618 is alloy is more likely to survive but that is your fault for the bad tune and not the piston.
The 4032 has a high silicon content which reduces the expansion rate, reduceing the chance of scoring and is a whole lot quieter.
These pistons also have a offset wrist pin just like your OEM pistons to reduce rocking in the bores for a smoother better sealing transition from moving up to down and down to up, most engines rotate only one way.
Why not just buy a mahle kit? With current mahle pricing and by the time you buy the cylinders to go with your Icons the totals come very close to each other. The mahle's are an old school design without some of the cool features of the Icons, plus the Icons are lighter.
They are available 92/94mm in A,B and down the road in C pin heights will become available. The 94mm set I have in stock now is a 35mm pin height.
Comes with rings, pins and clips. The bare piston weighs 386 grams and the pins weigh 112. These are high quality pistons that are worth the extra expense over the rpm limited Hypereutectic pistons.
Here is a Samba thread about them. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=776491&highlight=icon
