this is it's story...
bus was garaged for 20 years before I bought it, the guy took it to a shop for "running rough repair" mechanic never touched, year an a half later, called owner to come and pick it up, he was going out of business, owner drove it (limped in) home to his garage and never drove it again for 18 and a half years until he decided to sell it, then is when I came to the rescue.
I have paperwork of the last registration for the owner before me (1989).
I started cleaning everything from the fuel system starting with the 20 year old gas in the tank, dropped tank and took it to get washed and pressure tested, cleaned all metal fuel lines, replaced all rubber lines and sent injectors to test and refurbish.
tranny was sent to be checked, they drained old oil and resealed, perfect 4 speed original manual tranny.
brake pads and brake shoes were replaced after drained the old break fluid.
checked all electrical, no issues found, everything works properly as it should, including whippers, lights and buzzer alarm for when the key is still in the ignition.
yes you guessed right, this baby started right up once we got it all back together with the help of my cousin Alex and our buddy Carlos.
I drove it like that for a few months, ran very good but was using lots of oil so we dropped the engine and sent it to get rebuilt.
Beside still having the middle seat, I had a mattress made for the back so I used it as bed when the back seats folds down, not a full size bed as the westfalia but just made it comfortable enough, well done and good looking to match the entire bus.
I have enjoyed this bus, on top of all the local AZ shows, I have driven it to many places (never "trailered", enjoyed / suffered the drive) including Rocky point Sonora, Tijuana BCN, Nogales Sonora, L A, San Diego, Las Vegas.
Won a non expected "all original prize" at the Elite Just Clean VW 2015 show, I was surprised when my name was called.
This bus was featured in the October 2016 issue 108 of Volkswagen Camper & Commercial magazine.
IF THE AD IS UP, IT IS STILL AVAILABLE i WILL NOT RESPOND TO "IS STILL AVAILABLE?" QUESTION
