1955 3 Fold Oval Ragtop, Excellent Restoration! Price: $59,500
|
1955 3 Fold Ragtop Oval Window, Excellent Body Off Restoration!
This gorgeous genuine 3 Fold Ragtop Beetle was born on May 17, 1955 and was sold brand new at the legendary Competition Motors dealership in Hollywood, California. It has lived its whole life in California and was recently found hibernating in a barn in Santa Cruz where it was parked for at least 42 years! It was purchased by the current advanced collector owner and was just treated to a complete body-off-pan bare metal restoration that features restoration work by many of the most talented guys in Volkswagen restoration.
Some of those names include:
* Empire Restoration, Paint
* Jim Fowler of Get Hot Bug Shop, 36hp Engine Rebuild, Brake System Restoration
* West Coast Classics, Complete Interior
* Full Professional Sunroof Assembly Restoration
* Ed Fall, Distributor and Carburetor Restoration
* Rick Clark, Generator and Voltage Regulator Restoration
* Ruben Velasco of Classic Steering Wheel Restoration, Steering Wheel, Headlights, Rear View Mirror, etc. Restoration
* Wiring Works, Complete New Wiring Harness
* Orange Empire Speedometer, Speedometer Restoration
The Birth Certificate from Volkswagen is included and also shown in the photo gallery at the link near the bottom of this description. It confirms it is a genuine factory 3 Fold Sunroof Deluxe Oval that was originally Strato Silver with red leatherette interior and delivered to Competition Motors, Hollywood.
Some of the many features to note include the bullet fenders, ribbed doors, batwing steering wheel, original early pan, big spring W decklid, the flat rear H apron with no exhaust cutouts, and the single pipe muffler just to name a few. There are a couple cool accessories on the car that have lived with it since the beginning including the original VW stamped Fuel Reserve Extension and the Kamei accessory accelerator pedal. They were carefully restored and still with it today. The original Volkswagen clover leaf headed key is also still with the car!
The body and paint are exceptional and the "before" photos in the gallery will show you this was a great base car prior to the restoration. Consider the fact that it has lived in California its whole life and was parked inside that Santa Cruz barn since approximately 1980. The body was removed from the pan, completely stripped to bare metal, mounted on a rotisserie, and was first painted with 2 coats of 2K epoxy primer, 1 coat of sealer, 4 coats of the factory original L227 Strato Silver, and finished with 3 coats of clear. The fit and finish are excellent and very fresh. Other details to note include that the bumpers are the original VW German bumpers that were rechromed and the factory VW logos are still visible, too. All body and window rubber was also replaced with new during the restoration.
The interior is beautiful and was supplied by West Coast Classics. Red leatherette seats, door panels, upgraded German wool headliner, square weave carpeting, all first rate materials. Stunning and very accurate.
Mechanically this Oval has been completely gone through and features a period appropriate June 1955 36hp engine that is very accurately dressed in the early parts, was completely rebuilt by Jim Fowler, and is within a few weeks of production from the body and pan. Not the original, but very close! The transaxle was fully serviced and front suspension, brake system, shocks, wiring, etc. have all been freshly restored.. The pedal assembly was also professionally restored and a starter relay was installed for stronger starting on the factory 6 volt system. The restoration is super fresh with just 385 miles driven since completion.
Overall this is an exceptional example with a first rate fresh restoration on a great and desirable California black plate car that was stored in a dry barn for over 4 decades. You'd be very hard pressed to find as good of a genuine 3 fold Ragtop Oval base car as this was and by the time you brought it to this high level of professional restoration, you'd have a small fortune in it before you know it! Thanks!
