6 Volt Power Amp opt Bluetooth 4 Ch 100 W/Ch $445   Price: $445
Sony XM-GTX6041 modified for 6 Volt systems

The internal power supply of the Sony XM-GTX6041 Power Amplifier is modified to operate in 6 Volt systems.

1. The 6 Volt amplifier provides two 12 V outputs. The unswitched output provides 12 Volts to a head unit memory. The switched 12 V output provides power to a head unit or an iPhone, iPod, MP3 player, CD player, Cassette player or Satellite Radio from a DC-to-DC converter inside the amplifier with maximum output of 1 Amp.

The Amplifier 12 V Accessory output is switched off when the Amplifier remote is off, which is used to control the CD player remote power (accessory) input. This feature shuts off the head unit with the 6 volt ignition switch, but maintains the memory so all your settings will not be lost.

The 12 V Accessory output has been tested with the iPhone, iPod, Pioneer DEH-4300UB and Alpine CDE-123 head unit using one USB device. The Alpine CDE-123 head unit will charge and control an iPod or iPhone. An iPhone using Pandora will provide satellite radio without a satellite antenna or monthly satellite radio fee.

Under evaluation: Alpine CDE-147BT
Alpine’s fully loaded CD/HD/BT receiver. This unit is packed with technology and service. Enjoy built-in HD Radio® with multi-cast channels, Bluetooth® Plus, iPod® and iPhone® music playback, SiriusXM compatibility, and Pandora® control for Android™ and BlackBerry® – All–in-one single-DIN receiver. With built-in Bluetooth for hands-free calling and Pandora audio streaming. Subwoofer level and phase controls. 6-channel preamp outputs (front, rear and subwoofer)

A toggle switch or the ignition switch may be used to turn on the amplifier and head unit using the remote terminal. The modification was tested form 5.5 to 7.2 volts, it sounds fantastic.

The sound quality is better than most home theater systems costing thousands.

I tested the amp, at clipping the amp output was 20 V RMS.
Power output is 20 squared * 4 ohms = 100 Watts with 7.2 VDC input each channel. The 55 W specification is indicating what the power is at 0.04% THD.
Also the 20 Hz to 20 kHz spec is the minimum, the output is flat 10 Hz to 60 kHz.

This is a full power 2 x 4 ohms battery current test.
The 12 Amp meter on the left is measuring battery current.
The digital meter on the right is measuring battery voltage.
The average current between the min and max current is about 8 Amps.

¡°Well I've been using and abusing Wayne's 6V amplifier for over a year now and I think I've given it a pretty thorough shake down so I thought I'd report back and say that it has operated flawlessly in my car and I have experienced no problems with running it.

Naturally, I had wondered initially about how the power input would go and, to be honest, I have been quietly amazed. I have a voltmeter and, running a 6V system, I tend to keep a weather eye of the state of the electrics.

I'm used to seeing the system voltage drop when, say, I turn the headlights on, or brakelights and seeing the needle bip up and down in time with the turn signals. When I turn the amp. on and up, the voltmeter doesn't even twitch. I take this to mean the amp. is using very little power, at least at comfortable (to me) volumes. We've been on several longer trips where the amp. has been going strong and loud for hours at a time to drown out the aircooled madness in the rear with no problems whatsoever. It really doesn't seem to draw anything noticeable from the electrical supply (I don't understand how that can actually be possible but there you go). Wayne can probably tell us exactly what current it uses but I'd estimate it uses less than a single headlight bulb if we can be imprecise about it.¡±

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for that, splitting the stereo signal into two fronts and two rears made a big difference. The two front speakers (Sony 16cm 3-Way Speakers, 40W Rated power) sound sweet.
I¡¯m stoked to be getting all of this from a 6V battery though!
