Pumas are not kit cars, but complete production vehicles made primarily in partnership with VW Brazil.
Most vehicles shipped to the US had to be disassembled before shipment in order to pass strict US customs regulations.
21,735 Pumas were produced from 1964 to 1993 in Brazil and South Africa.
Only 610 PUMA GTI hardtops were produced from 1980 to 1984.
Only five 1984 GTI models were exported to the USA.

PUMA HISTORY: Genaro Malzoni, an Italian immigrant, built the first Pumas in the early 1960s strictly for racing in Brazil. However, it was not long before they were being built for street use. Full scale Puma production began in Brazil in 1964 using DKW [Audi] components. Later, after Volkswagen acquired DKW, Puma switched to VW components in 1967. This transition necessitated a design change from a front engine, front wheel drive vehicle to a rear engine, rear wheel drive vehicle.

New Years Day. Lost control on an icy road and slid down a 12foot ditch. No damage. Got pulled out and was back on the road in 45minutes. Makes for an awsome pic though.
