Here's the pic in the Bentley Bus service manual for VW 638, local manufacture, for driving the trailing arm bushings out of the front axle beam.

Here's my version of VW 638, for driving the bushings out of the Bus front axle beam.
I got 4' of 3/4" round stock, drilled and tapped a hole in one end, and made the driving "face" part, the part that contacts the bushing. I made the driving "face" doubly thick to prevent bending and to just make it very strong.

Here's the "face" of the driving part of the tool, VW638 (local manufacture). The elongated slot is so that this can be angled to fit through the bushing. The o.d. of this part is just slightly smaller than the o.d. of the bushing.
The slot is not the prettiest, but I don't have a mill, I just made it by drilling some holes and hand-filing the rest. It works just fine.

By angling the "face" part of the tool, it can slide through the bushing, When it's through the bushing, the rod is pressed, and the "face" presses up against the bushing, and then it's ready to be driven out.

Here's the end result: the bushing is driven out and the tool is still in the axle. Good results, but what a greasy mess!

Just got a set of 4 kingpins resurfaced. Another excellent job by the nearby machine shop.
I also got the bushings machined for the grease groove, which I feel is very important to have.

Here is a rare South African accessory for the split bus: a sun shield. It was made by the Durban company Stirling, which made the factory accessory roof racks for all VW models in SA. The company still exists, and still makes roof racks and exterior mirrors, among many other things.

Split Bus Clutch Pedal Arm

This is the clutch pedal arm as removed (tapped out with a hammer!) from the bus. Signifigant freeplay in the bushings and the arm made me want to remove the arm to inspect. When this one came out all nasty and rusty, I knew it was not going to be a pretty sight when it got all cleaned up.

I held a straight-edge to the shaft of the worn clutch pedal arm. This shaft is supposed to be smooth, nicely machined cylinder. Notice the incredible amount of wear to the shaft. This is definitely the very worst arm I have ever removed from a driving bus.

Here's the severely worn arm after cleaning. Notice severe rust pitting and serious damage caused to the shaft. Also, you can see how the worn out bushings have caused opposite side wear to the shaft. This part is economically unsaveable, and definitely not reuseable.

These are the brake pedal arm parts as removed. I noticed slop in the arm when replacing the master cylinder, so I removed the entire assembly to inspect and lubricate. Found alot of severely worn parts that needed replacing.

This shows the rust on the brake pedal arm pivot bolt/pin and the severely worn bushing in the arm itself. These parts need to be replaced.

This shows how much freeplay/space was worn between the pin and the bushing in the arm. Notice how there is no visible part of the bushing anymore, it has been totally worn away.

This is how the pin and the bushing in the pedal arm should look. Minimal wear and very little freeplay/wiggle when the pin is installed.

Here's the better arm and pin installed in the bushing. Notice how there is minimal space between the pin and bushing, ensuring smooth operation and minimal slop in the pedal when installed.
