Improperly installed freeze plug. Notice how it is not in straight and flush. Also, the clean spot on the plug is where a large blob of silicon fell of of, not sealing the plug at all.

Notice how most of the silicon sealant is not near the plug and is peeling away from the metal. I bet it still leaked.

This is the factory style nut, and this is what you hope to see when you get the plug out, a used-once, factory style nut, torqued and peened.

This is the factory style nut. This one has obviously seen better days. Nice hammer marks too.

I have seen this type of nut a few times before. It requires a special wrench to tighten it. This is not the factory style nut.The nuts in the 2 reduction boxes that had them were not very tight.
Notice the destroyed cage in the bearing. Grumbly noises for sure.

I welded some 10mm nuts to the freeze plugs and used an oil pump puller to pull the plugs out of the reduction box housings.

a reminder to drain and refill your steering boxes on "new" buses. my '59 kombi sat outside for years with no windshields and water must have gotten down the column. cold winter mornings froze the water and when i went to steer, this cover from my steering box blew apart.

Original Split Bus Nosecones from letter F and forward have a seal carrier at the end of the nosecone, in addition to the 2 "hockey stick" bushings. The seal carrier is not a bushing on original nosecones.
This pic compares the "E" nosecone to the "G" nosecone. Notice how much longer the "snout" is on the "G" nosecone, left, compared to the earlier "E" nosecone. The difference is 8mm.

Sealing Wax Red Pressed Bumper Bracket

I peeled some of the undercoating off my pressed bumper brackets from my September built 1957 Deluxe Microbus and found that the pressed bumper brackets were painted sealing wax red from the factory....the fronts are the same....I thought they were always black.
