I went to the junkyard, and pulled the steering box out of a 1979 Westfalia. One of the reasons I did this was to verify the size of the seal on the splined upper shaft.
Seal is a wiper seal, size 22 x 32 x 7 / 8. Again, a metric sized seal.
The letter PL on this seal, may be manufacturer's name?
