Intake manifold preheat block-off plates for header
Rome
Another small diversion/preparation from converting my '77 Beetle's current engine from stock single, to the dual Weber (Chinese clone) dual-throat carbs, was to make sure I had block-off plates for the existing muffler's 2 preheat pipe flanges. Those flanges need to be open for the single carb's intake manifold so that exhaust heat passes thru the manifold's preheat pipes and heats up the base of the intake manifold to prevent carb icing. But for dual carbs, there is no need for the preheat function because the intake manifold is short enough so that heat from the head travels up to the carb via conduction. The holes in the muffler flanges need to be closed off to prevent a big exhaust leak and big exhaust bang upon deceleration (!).

Even though I have a set or two of the plates already on various exhaust headers which I could've removed, they are based on flat metal and I thought I could make a set. I started with an 8" long "reinforcement plate" from a HW store, which is 1 1/8" wide and 3/16" thick. I marked the outlines of the preheat gasket, using one of the holes in the plate for one of the holes in the gasket. The plate was just a bit too narrow for the full width of the gasket, but that won't matter. Plate was long enough to make a 3rd plate.

I cut out the shapes outdoors with my angle grinder and thin cutting disc, then shaped/rounded the edges on my workbench grinding wheel. Drilled the other hole starting with 1/8" bit, upped to an interim size, then ended up with 9/32" which is sufficient for the M6 fastening bolts. Painted them high heat black. Even though I broke up the work among a few days, the total time was only approx. an hour.
