Here's what I found on a recent super vert restoration. The front left ball joint would pop out of the control arm when the car turned corners. When I bought new (correct) ball joints to install, I discovered that the PO had installed the wrong ball joint that was smaller in diameter and made barely any compression contact into the control arm. They obviously knew there was a problem with this arrangement. Instead of installing the correct ball joints (for $10), this is how they fixed it (but not entirely).
