| Subaru EJ series engine coolant schematics showing the application of a full-bypass thermostat on a non-turbo engine. Observation suggested boiling in the 1-3 head due to a low/no flow situation due to air in the heater core preventing sufficient flow around the valves in the 1-3 head. The 2-4 head would stay cool enough and the return from the heater core was insufficient to cause the thermostat to open. This solution was installed in August 2016 to overcome this possibility and to ease purging and has been used for over 30,000 miles now with no issues and rock solid temperature control when sufficient air flow is present.
