Designer Don Haskin with his 1967 show car the "Thunderbug" with his custom fiberglass fenders, hood scoops and spoiler. He and his partner Max Becker owned the original "Bug House" in Studio City selling Intac Inc's custom parts. Copycats include Bill Mitchell's 1970 VW Gasser using the original's name and front hood scoops, Bugformance 1968 Manx-clone dune buggy "Thunder Bug" and Mattel/Monogram's "Thunder Bug" model by Tom Daniel with the signature look of the original: rear hood scoops/flared fenders going into a spoiler/single stinger exhaust and square "Nerf Bars". Don Haskin Later designed the Bushwhacker Dune Buggy and after being copied by Marion Ruggles to create his "clone" the Ocelot - He and partner Max Becker stopped selling bodies and built over 700 driving Bushwhackers for rentals in Hawaii and other resort areas. Ralph Nader visited KDM's shop declaring the "Bushwhacker" a safe vehicle and informed them they were the 7th largest carmaker in the US in 1968. |
