BFGoodrich Silvertown Radial 165R15 3/4" whitewall - super beetle trunk fit Posted: Sat Aug 18, 2018 4:31 pm     Views: 90      Rating: Not rated

Many 165's are too wide sidewall-to-sidewall to fit in a Super Beetle trunk. The BFGoodrich 165R15 is a little small compared to some 165s and it does actually fit. These photos show the tire on a 4" wheel (not 4.5 or 5.5) in a 1971 Super Beetle, inflated to 27 psi. It fits, but just barely. It requires a push and literally squeaks in. Although 165's are actually smaller in diameter than bias-ply tires, the width of the radial sidewall (round, bulging shape compared to bias-ply tires) causes the tire to hit the edge of the tank support in a Super Beetle and prevents the tire from sliding all the way back. The thickness of the tire also causes the front trunk liner to float about an inch above the metal trunk floor, resting instead on the sidewall of the tire.
