Seeing as the brake shoes were not properly resting on (i.e. directly restrained by) the spreader bars with the parking brake handle in resting / bottom position, decided to remove some of the metal at top of the brake shoes, where they contact the wheel cylinder pistons. Didn’t file off very much – only about 0.060” or so off each shoe at that location.
Once that material was removed, the upper portions of the brake shoes now rested on and were restrained by the spreader bar (with parking brake handle in resting position). In the pics, note how the parking brake cable adjustment and parking brake shoe levers are in a more expected / desirable position, with the parking brake handle in the resting / bottom position.
Don’t know exactly what was out of spec. (brake shoe geometry, wheel cylinder pistons, or parking brake cable length -- ??), but with some careful fitting and adjustment / modification of the brake shoe geometry, was able to bring in all back in line… |
