CMC Porsche 959 Speedster Posted: Wed Oct 23, 2019 5:56 am     Views: 134      Rating: Not rated

One more picture of my Porsche powered 959 Speedster re-creation in Martini graphics! The body-kit was marketed and sold by Classic Motor Carriages, CMC and then Fiber Fab. This is a late FiberFab 359 kit that incorporated a factory, professional Jig built tubular frame front to rear. It was originally built using 1974 Porsche 911 components and has the 959/911 wheelbase. It was originally built with a Porsche 911 six cylinder and still has the Dry Sump Lubrication system intact. It now has a Porsche Type 4 engine installed per the Fiberfab builders manual that included installation instructions and plans to install the Porsche 4 and Porsche six cylinder air-cooled engines. Since it has 959 styling adapted to their early speedster kit, CMC called it the 359 and also to avert potential law suits from Porsche. At that time, 1986 to 89, all the original Porsche 959 super cars were blacklisted from entering the US. CMC saw this as an opportunity to combine 959 Styling with their Speedster replica know-how and basically used the mid-section of their old Speedster. However, Every body mold except the interior tub and doors was completely different to accommodate the longer wheel base and 959 body design. Like the real 959 the engine compartment was greatly enlarged to offer proper cooling for much larger more powerful engines. This was the most expensive car in the CMC line-up and the fiberglass was made much thicker/stronger and was smoother as constructed using new improved molds. Just Like the original 959 many people did not like the styling and the kits never sold well also because they were very expensive to do-right with large engines costing more also. The gamble did not pay-off for CMC / Fiberfab who shortly after went out of business. Later, with the interest in sports racing and super car re-creations and replicas becoming more fashionable the molds were purchased by Thunder Ranch who produced it for a couple of years as a 959 kit but it was short lived.
