More Beetles in "The Seven-Ups" (1973) Posted: Sun May 30, 2021 9:03 am     Views: 6      Rating: Not rated

Movie filmed in New York City, with police detective Buddy (Roy Scheider) investigating who killed his partner. Chase sequence is superb, from which I took most of these screen shots. Many VWs being passed, or parked. Buddy chases the antagonists in his grey 1973 Pontiac Ventura (brand version of Chevy Nova) who are driving a "midnight blue" black 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville 4-door sedan. Baddies are Bo and Moon (played by actual stunt driver Bill Hickman who also drove the black Dodge Charger in the "Bullitt" car chase; and Richard Lynch). IMO Buddy's engine sound has been partially dubbed in from Bullitt's Mustang from that movie's car chase, complete with engine shifting pauses despite the Ventura being an automatic (!?). Here are many of the Beetles seen during the car chase. I saw several more, but could not get clean screen shots of them.
1. 2 Beetles on Riverside Drive on west side of Manhattan, with Buddy charging through the turn in his Ventura.
2. Same location as 1, looking north; with yellow Cabrio heading southbound in distance. The blue Beetle at the end is a '72 Super. Bridge in background is the George Washington, connecting Manhattan to Fort Lee, New Jersey.
3. Beige '68/'69 Beetle parked at left. The Grand Ville is about to ram through between the police cruisers to get to the westbound GW Bridge.
4. Red late Beetle on highway. This is the northbound side of the Saw Mill Parkway in Westchester County, coming up on Reader's Digest Road; looking south. I've driven on this section hundreds of times since the late 1970's.
5. Ivory/pale yellow '68/'69 Beetle parked at left curb, Manhattan. This is where the Grand Ville smashes through a wooden barricade into a street where many schoolchildren are playing.
6. Elsewhere in the movie- 2 Beetles in Manhattan.
7. Early 1960's Beetle parked on an Avenue in Manhattan. That's Buddy in the beige coat running across the street.
8. 3 Beetles in Manhattan. Everett B has a similar shot in his gallery in which the (center) Beetle is more
