| Here a picture of the 40-horse case, number 3535714 that the new Mahle 83mm big-bore pistons are for. The difference in skirt length results in number 3 piston locking up against the flywheel side of the case. The distributor for the kit, part number 111 198 057 A83, informed me that the case needs to be clearanced a few thousands... or a quarter inch depending. Tragically I had already assembled the engine this far. Once this clearancing has been done, the case will have to come apart, everything will need to be cleaned and a new gasket kit purchased before reassembly. I certainly wish the distributor had let me know beforehand. |
