PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man performed his own surveillance this week to track down his stolen Volkswagen Bug in southeast Portland.

The victim, only identified by the name Sam, said the car was stolen in southeast Portland two weeks ago. He immediately placed an ad on Craigslist.org in hopes of getting the word out that it was stolen.

From that ad, he received a tip Monday.

"I didn't get an address at that point, but got specific directions to this house and saw the chassis of what I thought was my car laying in the yard," the victim said.

He called Clackamas County deputies, who said they went to the house and asked to look in the garage. A woman denied and demanded a search warrant.

Sam said deputies couldn't get a search warrant so he and his family decided to watch the home day and night.

On Tuesday night, he said they saw men load the car into a moving van.

Sam called authorities and deputies pulled over the van. They found only the body of the stolen car inside.

Kevin Donovan and Jeremy Garcia were both arrested on charges of possession of a stolen car.

The rest of the car remained missing until deputies responded to the home with a search warrant. They found part of the car in the driveway, the engine inside an old Volkswagen bus and smaller car parts in a trash can.

"It's bittersweet," said Sam, who plans to rebuild the car. "They don't have it. We have it back. It's not the ultimate goal, but the thief doesn't win."

Detectives said they're still looking for Brandon Carnahan in connection with the case. They said he lived at the house and has a lengthy criminal history in California.

Anyone with information on his location is asked to call the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
