This is a VW camshaft of unknown miles pulled from a GEX-rebuilt motor. You can see the complete failure of the gear teeth. Two were entirely sheared from the gear, while the others cracked. If I had to guess, the gear was heat treated to too high of a hardness and/or not tempered properly. The only other damage was where metal chunks had found their way into the oil pump.
