Designed and built by VW Australia, the VW Australian Country Buggy was sold in the Philippines as the "Sakbayan", a contraction of the term "sasakyan ng bayan", literally : "vehicle of the public."
It was said that VW Australia produced a limited number of "Sakbayans", most of them in right-hand drive configurations. The only left-hand drive versions were those that were exported to the Philippines.
