DAD!!! WTF are you doing to Mom’s '59 ragtop!
Evan Smith
In 1973 Dad made a shorty roach for us goons.
I was 10 when he had me unbolting the gray body and stripping the red interior.
Built only to the highest of Flintstone standards; A little angle iron for a trailer hitch, an old bed frame to double as a grab-bar and steering wheel support, a couple planks for a seat, an ammo box/battery box. Well bolted-no welding, and it never broke…the beginning of 20 years of fun - we all learned to drive on it, 5 of his kids, his nieces, nephews, countless friends and visitors.
No seat belts, roll bar or helmets and no one got hurt, but to hedge against impending tragedy Dad did install a setscrew carb governor and shifter cross bar to block-out 3rd and 4th gears so we learned to always have a screwdriver on board to rectify that sitchiation. (I rectified one of my ten year old finger nails on the generator pulley notch making said adjustment…but it was worth it) Yee-Haa! Gas up at the Mobil and see how far you can get on the blue highways before you got a ride back from officer Obie.
The most fun was taking it out on the lake ice - get up some speed with those studded Firestone Town ‘n Countries, yank the wheel and hold on…weeeeeeeeeeowatch out for the ice fishermen!
Jumping the ‘59 shorty roach was a blast.
We all done growed up and Yankee Dad rubed the transaxle and another engine (I kept the orig) on to the front of our Ford tractor to power a 6’ JD snow thrower, custom jackshafts, u-joints and all.
