snow after muggy 88* Chicago was a shock to the system. Bus has 553,000 miles on it, running fine, good heat, lucky thing.

Squareback Engine Top Shot

this engine has never been been torn down. All decals and little pieces are there. The odometer says 41,960 miles. I did have to change out those red breather hoses which I would like to track down.

I've been looking out this windshield for 28 years now, and I still think it is one of the more attractive interiors, simple honest and rugged.

Half Decade Mark

This is a chassis shot. Every fall since I have owned it I touch up the chips and scratches and rust everywhere on the chassis underneath. Now that there are six or seven coats of rubberized undercoating, many nicks don't even make it to the painted metal underneath. The lower engine tins and heater pipes need scrape/sand/painting every three years.

"Bushing"
Amskeptic
I drilled the throttle levers with a bit that was slightly smaller than my new "bushings", heavily modified 16 ga spade terminals that were ground down on the bench grinder. They already have a nice "waist" to stay inside the holes on the throttle levers. I did need to bevel the ends to get them to start into the holes without too much of a fight.

That tachometer belonged to a Jaguar long ago, it is a Lucas with a silk-screened face with VW numerals transposed. It is now 27 years-old and working fine. The tach's light diffuser is a coffee cup lid with a gap unfortunately growing at the top as the plastic shrinks

Half Decade Mark
Amskeptic
The exhaust system was last refreshed in 1995, with new exchangers and a Dansk muffler from RMMW. I keep the thing religiously painted and always warm the engine up thoroughly (a functional thermostat helps) when I start it to help reduce corrosive effects of condensation. You can see the valve covers and bales are painted too. The bale is given a scour to give it a brushed stainless steel look, then it is painted with engine clearcoat. The valve covers and tins are given Gloss Black Engine Enamel.(thems the red Koni shocks visible)

Half Decade Mark
Amskeptic
There are some high mileage parts in this engine bay. The flywheel and pressure plate have an original 521,918 miles, as do the distributor, carburetors, tins, flaps, crankcase, oil cooler, etc. Its engine was last rebuilt in the winter of 2002/3, when I overhauled it in the dining room. It now has 86,918 miles since the Winnie TX gallery plug fiasco. I did put some used heads on it last May when the originals gave up some valve guides and showed some cracks in the wrong places at 505,000 miles. It is running well but I have a fresh engine with an almost new crankcase in the works.

I re-covered the seats with TMI upholstery which has held up extremely well. It took three sets to get the correct pattern, however. The interior panels are becoming unglued from the cardboard, but this car has seen some brutally hot days out in the desert and has hosted some rather active kids along the way.

It has been five years since I posted some pictures of my rattle can spray-paint job of my '73 bus at 419,000 miles.
It is now at 521,918 miles. That engine enamel is good tough exterior paint, easy to touch up, too.

The hatch covers were crumbling brownish plastic. I coated the insides with clear rtv sealant to build some strength, and painted the outside with white plastic-bondable paint and rubbed the paint into the millions of hairline cracks with my finger. This helped bring out the grain of the vinyl too.

Vacuum Leak Search Dual Solex Buses '72-74

It is springtime. Get out to your bus and look closely for vacuum leaks before you toast your engine. Follow the pink. Two dimensional drawing makes it difficult to see elevations of parts but it'll make sense when you're out there. Any questions, PM.

Nice sandblasted/clearcoated fan housing back on. This job took five days in a parking lot 3,300 miles from home. Didn't need the overhaul it turned out, machinist thought cam gear was loose. It wasn't. Put in new bearings anyways since it was 100,000 miles since last overhaul in 1992.

Tune Up Day For Dual Carb Bus
Amskeptic
Again, may be difficult to read this mess, but I hope to use it as a reference for those who ask about dual carb bus tune-up adjustment problems. I will be doing a major write-up on how these systems work. When they do, you can't beat the driveability and economy, and of course, the value of your bus skyrockets when it is all original. : )

Glendale Apocalypse
Amskeptic
Though it looks like my car is running a little rich, I was actually doing a quickie 5 day parking lot overhaul while passing through Glendale CA and the mountains were on fire. Fortunately it was only a two day fire.
(that was the famous Unnecessary Overhaul where the machine shop gave me some mis-matched rods and charged me for valve guides that he never put in. The noise was not a loose camshaft gear, it was merely the oil pump drive lug rattling in the groove)

Timing Scale
Amskeptic
I ordered a new timing scale because mine lost all of its numbers over the years. The new one was cheesy plastic? so I painted the high-lighted numerals, stuck my own reference mark between the recommended 5*ATDC and 10*ATDC marks that came with the scale. The fan housing was sand blasted and clearcoated for a nice durable sort-of-original-looking finish.
