BIGMIKEY
When I was disassembling my 1973 Beetle Inside the tunnel under the shift coupler I see this spring hooked to a tab welded to the bottom of the tunnel. the other end of the spring was hooked to a clamp on the shift rod. The car was formerly an Automatic stick shift. All the autostick parts were gone when I bought it.

I bought this engine in 2010 as a long block and 2 milk crates of parts. I assembled it using extra parts that I had in my parts stash. Compression was even across all 4 cylinders but a bit low at 90psi. I does run well though and will hold me over while I build a bigger more powerful engine.

This is close to what I ended up with in front to weld. Some hammer forming and fitment yet to do. Especially on the right.

Frame Head Repair
BIGMIKEY
When I did the frame head bottom plate I made liberal use of self drilling/tapping screws. I would clamp the panels together and drill through the bottom plate into the flange below. I would use a 1/4" drill bit so the screw body would clear the hole. I then installed the self drilling/tapping screw and cinched it down tight. This way I could move the clamp and repeat. Once the panels were flush all around I could rosette weld them together.

Clamping frame head bottom plate
BIGMIKEY
I fastened the rear edge of the bottom plate to the napoleon hat flange and made sure to line up the 4 oblong M10 bolt holes. I then bolted them solid with big flat washers. To ensure the bottom plate didn't move while hammering and fitting I drilled and threaded 2 1/4-20 bolt holes thru the floorpan lip and fastened it with bolts.

After all the welding was done and the frame flipped back right side up I sprayed on a liberal coating of Eastwood internal frame coat. This stuff does seep into cracks and crevices well. Hopefully it will eliminate future rust. At least for another 40 years.

Front Guide Pin
BIGMIKEY
I took one of the old bolts, cut the head off and tapered the end a bit, cut a slot in it for a screw driver. Then I screwed it into the heater channel nut plate. This helps guide the body down on to the chassis but also makes it easier to screw the 10mm bolts into that nutplate. It's free to flop around in the cage that holds it and is sometimes tough to get a thread started. But with the guide pit it stabilizes it and makes it easier to start the hold down bolt. Once one hold down bolt is in place and snugged down I can remove the guide pin(using the screwdiver slot if needed) and put in the 2nd bolt. Works good.

I took one of the old rear bolts, cut the head off and tapered the end a bit, cut a slot in it for a screw driver. Then I screwed it into the body mount in the rear shock mount. This helps guide the body down on to the chassis.
Then you can put the steel sleeve in place and continue with the body install. The slot is to make it easier to remove the guide pin.
