4 months rebuilding the front beam.

2 years, 3 months of spare time so far.

Now on to the rear suspension - new brake lines, brake shoes, brake cylinders and separator bars and no doubt a whole lot more.

Still perfection takes time...

It is such a capable off road/dirt road vehicle.
I've now completed 7000 miles since rebuild.

I still consider this the shakedown period, I certainly gave it a thorough shaking over the last 500 miles.

Still the cheapest and most reliable type of car i've owned.

:-)

Grünhilde - first trip!
Breslau7
One hour after refitting the engine, took Grünhilde on her first shakedown trial.

a 3 day, 500 mile trip to Main Range National Park, lots of dirt, winding roads and 14 creek crossings, one of which was over the top of the wheel arches.

And yes, it isn't quite waterproof - heater ducts!

Otherwise, it is fantastisch und ausgezeichnet!

PS I did carry a langnase full of tools and spares.

Rebuilding a type 3 cooling fan
Breslau7
I have replaced my cooling fan for the 3rd and last time.

It had started to hit the side of the aluminium housing and made the usual clattering noise.

Previously I tried 2 methods to fix the problem, both times they failed again within 10000 miles.

Method 1: using the bolt holes.
The bolt holes are no use for stopping play in the fan.
They are only used to pull the fan off.
Leaving them in will unbalance the fan and over time cause the crank to chew out the case.

Method 2: welding the fan
Welding the fan will remove the damping characteristics and also destroy the motor in time.

This time we turned up a mould (this pic) and poured new urethane damper rings.

To put it back together we used dual sided rivets machined from a clutch system and a special rivet tool @ 2.5 tonne pressure.

After that the fan was rebalanced to reduce vibration.

The result is the first new cooling fan for a type 3 in 20+ years.

Testing so far has amounted to 1000 miles with no issues.

Another low rust specimen.

I am so glad we don't use salt on our roads.
All 3 Type 3's have had very little rust for 42+ year old bits of steel.

Grünhilde - Pedal cluster rebuild.
Breslau7
Fun activity for the Type 3 maintainer.

Pull out your foot/car interface and give it a service.

Some problems I found:
Seized clutch cable in the bowden tube at rear (due to missing seal).
Clutch pedal lever worn thru due to the above (this pic).
Accelerator cable frayed and missing seal at engine end of cable
Bent accelerator rod.
43 years of grime and sorely in need of lubrication.

Looking forward to driving her.

Grünhilde - Step fourteen - the unplanned step
Breslau7
I did not think I would be pulling out the front beam.

The grease had combined with dirt to form one of the harder materials known to man.

If I pulled it out, it would be easier to clean...

But as always once you start, the job just grows.

Rust removal, painting, bump stops, shimmy damper, shimmy damper bush, all 4 ball joint rubbers, discs machined, bearings, and on and on.

Still looking forward to putting it back together.

Götterdämmerung!

Grünhilde - Step thirteen - on to the panels
Breslau7
I've removed the taping up on the body, now:

Sanding back the filler primer on the four corners, two doors, bonnet and tailgate.

They have all had substantial repairs, but the two front quarters are the worst, and the curviest!

First I block it with 180grit then orbital with 320grit.
Follow up by hand with 400 grade on the difficult to get to bits.
Rub over with a scratch revealer (black) then orbital again at 400.
3 down, 5 to go.

Mein Gott in himmel!
