A customer came to me with shifting problems. I drove the car and it would immediately kick the shifter out of 3rd gear as soon as you started to let the clutch pedal up. If you forced it into 3rd with about 30 lbs of force, it would stay in like normal.
When I took the nose cone off, this is what I saw.

This wire spring holds the 3 shift plates in place and allows them to slide with the slider in the transmission.
The outline is the shape VW designed. The one shown is one that came out of a rebuilt trans. There's no way it got that shape in use. The previous mechanic bent it that way.

On the right is the stock reverse idler gear for 73 and later Type 1 & 3 transmissions. On the left is a new aftermarket gear with a new counterbore. This is to allow you to set the engagement of reverse deeper into the gear on the 1-2 slider.

Here is the main case just before installing all the gears. Note the lack of a reverse idler shaft. Reversing will be accomplished by turning a knob on the dash to reverse the polarity of the motor.

Here are some pics of the special two speed VW transaxle I recently built for use in an electric car.

In this pic there's an extra ring welded to the OD of the CV flange. Bolts are screwed into the radial holes, and a speed sensor bolted to a bracket using the long studs to the left of the flange. This will be used to limit the speed in reverse to about 10 mph.

Autostick Automatic Stick Shift 2nd gear (Low)
Bruce
72 and later Autosticks came with an alternate Low gear. It is 2.25:1 instead of 2.06. The difference is only one tooth so VW machined a tiny groove in the tips of the gear teeth as a visual indicator.
36/16 = 2.25:1
35/17 = 2.06:1

Some of the repro SHO semaphore lenses are too short!
Here's how to measure the lens to see if it's the right length. You need to use a known accurate ruler or calipers like in my pic. If you get a cheap plastic kiddie ruler, you have no hope in figuring this out.

This is the threaded stud between the input shaft and the main shaft of the transmission. This one was removed from a gearbox formerly built by Transform. For some unknown reason, they put a small o-ring in the middle for no apparent reason.

Lightened 2nd gear idler
Bruce
Here's a 2nd gear idler I drilled about 10 years ago. These small holes were good for about 10% Reducing weight on the two shafts has a double effect. Less weight down the road, and the synchros work better. Next one will get more and bigger holes.
