IRS drive flange seal installer
Bruce
I picked this up at a swap meet a few years ago. The seller was an older guy who used to work at a VW dealer in the 70s. This tool is to install the oil seal in an IRS sidecover. It sets the seal square to the axle and at the right depth.

I use my 2 jaw puller to pull the diff bearings off the diff. This tool rests nicely in the bore so the leadscrew can push against it.

Tool to hold the pinion shaft
Bruce
When tightening the pinion bearing retainer nut, this hex tool will hold onto the end of the pinion shaft while you turn the pinion nut. Or vice-versa.
The scale of the photo is deceiving. The combination wrench is a giant 36mm.

When welding the synchro cones to the gear, I drop this tool inside the gear to prevent any weld spatter from sticking to the bearing surface.

#3 is from 73 to 75
#4 is 75 to 1980.

A customer came to me with shifting problems. I drove the car and it would immediately kick the shifter out of 3rd gear as soon as you started to let the clutch pedal up. If you forced it into 3rd with about 30 lbs of force, it would stay in like normal.
When I took the nose cone off, this is what I saw.

Shift plate springs
Bruce
This wire spring holds the 3 shift plates in place and allows them to slide with the slider in the transmission.
The outline is the shape VW designed. The one shown is one that came out of a rebuilt trans. There's no way it got that shape in use. The previous mechanic bent it that way.

On the right is the stock reverse idler gear for 73 and later Type 1 & 3 transmissions. On the left is a new aftermarket gear with a new counterbore. This is to allow you to set the engagement of reverse deeper into the gear on the 1-2 slider.

Here is the main case just before installing all the gears. Note the lack of a reverse idler shaft. Reversing will be accomplished by turning a knob on the dash to reverse the polarity of the motor.

Here are some pics of the special two speed VW transaxle I recently built for use in an electric car.

In this pic there's an extra ring welded to the OD of the CV flange. Bolts are screwed into the radial holes, and a speed sensor bolted to a bracket using the long studs to the left of the flange. This will be used to limit the speed in reverse to about 10 mph.

Autostick Automatic Stick Shift 2nd gear (Low)
Bruce
72 and later Autosticks came with an alternate Low gear. It is 2.25:1 instead of 2.06. The difference is only one tooth so VW machined a tiny groove in the tips of the gear teeth as a visual indicator.
36/16 = 2.25:1
35/17 = 2.06:1
