Extra ground connection: Vanagon dashboard
Dampcamper
I added a supplemental ground connection under the dashboard at the top of the steering column brace. Bolted in with a toothed lockwasher in the sandwich to ensure good grounding. Wires run from here to ground trees (these are also jumpered together) and blower motor and wiper motor. I butt-spliced these into existing ground wires, leaving them also connected to the ground trees so multiple opportunities exist to have a solid ground. Ground lug is yellow, upper right corner. One wire goes to "trees", lower left corner.

Vanagon added headlight ground location
Dampcamper
Drilled a clearance hole for a 10-32screw, scraped off paint both front and back around that hole down to shiny steel, used stainless steel screw, nylock nut and a toothed lockwasher under the nut to ensure digging into the steel. Coated lightly with silicone dielectric grease to prevent corrosion.

About that "Thunking" noise
Dampcamper
Heard a couple of "thunks" from under the Westy, related to acceleration. It's a diesel so not a powerful thunk, but noticeable. Found the forward transmission support to be half undone. Replaced missing nut and washer, using blue LocTite liberally.

Volvo vs. Vanagon
Dampcamper
September of 2012, my Vanagon was hit while parked in front of my house. I had just been between it and my other van but left to walk my dog. The Volvo was one day old, the young lady driving hadn't *exactly* asked her Dad if it was OK to use it. After some severe arm-wrestling, their insurance paid to repair the damage. No injuries.

Stub axle gouged by CV joint
Dampcamper
The inner end of the half-axle lacked a circlip to retain the axle in the CV joint. This allowed the axle to slip outwards and the outer CV joint to crash into the axle stub's backside causing the silver arc gouge. I was getting a ticking sound that got louder as the CV would skip off of the shaved metal area.

Peeling the ceiling
Dampcamper
All of the flocking from my pop-top ceiling after I scraped it off. Used a razor blade in a long-handled paint-scraper handle, changing blades often as it would get dulled quickly. Held the angle of the blade quite low, if too high it would dig into the gelcoat. After flocking removal and cleaning, I applied a layer of Reflectix insulation, then a foam/vinyl headliner over that. The tent was stapled in over the turned-up edges of vinyl.

I bought my '71 DD in 1990 (at 238,000 miles) and have used it ever since. We've been into Baja 3 times (once clear down to Cabo) otherwise Washington and Oregon mostly. On a drive to Tacoma today it turned over 500,000 miles just at the exit to go to the Olympic Peninsula on US 101. Temptation was to go around the peninsula but I had to get to work tonight. Bummer.
