Cruise control in a 79 Westy
Eaallred
Audiovox Cruise control avaliable at PepBoys. This picture shows the cruise control unit itself. I cheated and used one of the bolts that holds the blower fan in place to hold the unit. Vacuum was tied into the small vacuum port on the intake, and the cable from the unit turns over to the driver side of the engine bay, then turns around and mounts into the bracket coming off the EGR valve. This location works great, since you can very easily access the coverplate and adjust the small DIP switches when fine tuning it to work on your car. I haven't had a chance to tidy up the wiring yet though. No "electrical noise" problems affecting the unit with it mounted here.

Audiovox Cruise control avaliable at PepBoys. This picture shows the arm that was installed onto the throttle shaft. You can position this arm wherever you want. Wherever you mount the other end of the cable, you want the arm at a 45 degree angle to it so that it is able to pull to full throttle from idle. The Cruise unit allows about 1.75 inches of pull, and the closest hole to the pivot provides 1.5 inches from idle to full throttle which works perfectly. I could have trimmed the excess off, but saw no need to do it.

Cruise control installed in a 79 Westy

Audiovox Cruise control avaliable at PepBoys. This picture shows the modified bracket for the cruise control cable. The kit comes with a lot of misc. hardware so you can fit it to just about any engine. I used the EGR bolts to hold the bracket in place. No big deal since the EGR is blocked off at the intake anyway. This location puts it inline with how I want it to pull the throttle on my FI 2.0L.

Here's how the engine and has heater look installed in the bus. It's a tight fit. And yes, those are pea-shooters until I get around to fixing that part. :-)

This is the heater control that we came up with. The lever is connected to a 73-78 bus heater cable, with a simple pull/push switch to turn the heater on and off. Eventually i'll try to stick a stock dash knob onto it to make it look more 'correct. Maybe paint it the same color as the dash eventually too.

Here's what the ductwork looks like as it is inside the interior. The rear seat frame had to be modified to clear the ductwork. Originally the seat frame sat about 1" from the wheel well, so there was no way we could have fit any duct work without doing some modification.

The two pieces of ductwork we made out of 16 gauge steel. It goes from a 3 3/8" square hole from the heater to a 2"x6" duct to squeeze between the wheel well and the gas tank, goes in under the back seat along the wheel well, then opens up to a 5" x7 1/2" to the passenger area. Unfortunatly, you can't see it with everything installed.

Me and my Dad finally installed a gas heater into my bus.

Here we have the gas heater cleaned up and re-painted with the same paints used on the engine tin so everything matches. Re-wired with the same wire as the engine too. The bottom of the heater frame was cut off, and we added 3 1/2" of frame under it to sit it high enough that the burner assembly would clear the wheel well, the tailight housing, and top of the engine bay. The burner is about 3/16" from the wheel well, the blower fan is about 3/16" from the top of the engine bay, and the combustion fan hose is barley touching the taillight housing. If this was even the slightest bit bigger, it would not have fit. I was able to find replacement flex line for the exhaust just like the original at Napa Auto Parts. 1 1/4"ID, 1 3/8"OD stainless steel. I didn't paint the burner, but just cleaned the galvanized finish on it.

Me and my Dad finally installed a gas heater into my bus.

I'm not sure what this was originally installed in, or what location it was installed. The way the frame of the heater was shaped, it would not fit in a split bus engine bay. The hose from the combustion fan wraped around the back of the burner assembly making it even longer and more difficult to install. The fuel pump was toast, so we fit an electric pump which seems to work great.

After driving our buses along the Skyline Drive in Utah, we came across this sign to warn people about the part we just came through:

"ROUGH ROAD - Recommended for 4 wheel drive only"

It was rough and muddy, but nothing a few buses couldn't handle! From left to right, Ken, Dave, and Eric.

I've heard a dozen ideas for a drink holder in a bus (some pretty complex), but saw this at the Eureka springs show this weekend, and felt dumb for not thinking of it myself! The drink holder is hose clamped on with a piece of inner tube rubber wrapped around the column. Very cool!
