Their had been a shunt repair before but to do these right you must get to the core where the cancer is..or your ride is short lived on the road. the previous repair man used brass rod tacked on ever inch or so . I felt it better to start over. and remove all the cancer rust that was impossible to get it. this was the next caretaker has proof that there is nothing hiding to jump out and bite you at a later date. I would say about 80 percent of the ( project cars) on the samba have about 7 to 10,000 in metal repair yet to be done. If you cant fix it yourself your in for a rude awakening . I service about 150 body shops . The problem they face is the shop overhead is ungodly and they need to turn cars that they can get oem parts for at a reasonable speed.. space is money , time is money ,waiting for parts ( cost money ) poorly fitting aftermarket parts do not even come close to original for fitment. Ill stop here because I can go on and on.

This is what a filter looks like after a start up of an engine that was sitting for a while, and this is after I had flushed the case several times with fuel oil and had replaced the screen. The bottom of the can was also full of crud and slime... New engines with new chinese barrels have the same issues because the barrels are soft and wear at a high rate... you get tons of cast iron crud as the rings scrape the hone pattern on the barrels. Save your oil oil pump ( you will need it to have the flange cut off..to space the late model pump out away from the cam bolts) that stick out from the early type "flat cam gear" . Beware of brand new aftermarket pumps--- I have seen the pump drive gear shaft with very little interference fit on the gear... on start up with a new motor I strongly suggest an oil pressure guage plugged into the case where the sensor would normally be. a loose shaft will fail almost immediately rendering 0 oil pressure.

2.1 Water boxer crank... they come counterweighted from the factory These will fit in a type one case . with a little machine work on the rear main. this will give you a 76mm stroker... and very very smoothe running engine
