Beetles in "The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming"
Rome
1966 movie set on fictitious "Gloucester Island" in Massachusetts but actually filmed in the northern California coastal towns Mendocino and Fort Bragg. Soviet submarine Lieutenant Yuri Rozanov (Alan Arkin) steals a battered black '57 Beetle outside of the village. Vacationer Walt Whittaker (Carl Reiner) shoots at Yuri with his shotgun as Yuri charges him. Yuri ducks the shotgun hits in the windshield and drives into a wooden fence. He's not injured. Rear shot of the '57 is from IMCDB for this movie.

There's a light blue Beetle in the village among the townspeople.

Greg M's 1969 Karmann Cabriolet, Lower Hudson Valley, New York 2013
Rome
My friend Greg from central Connecticut (63vwdriver) was in southern New York on business in July 2013. With a good weather forecast, he drove his fine Yukon Yellow '69 Cabrio. We met up at the Bear Mountain Motel just south of West Point, where he often stayed. Greg is an enthusiast of vintage diners as well as older roadside architecture so we drove to the town of Peekskill in Westchester County. I provided a nice surprise by directing him to the Center Diner on Bank Street, a National brand diner built in 1939. Unfortunately it is now permanently closed mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

More Beetles in "The Seven-Ups" (1973)

More Beetles in "The Seven-Ups" (1973)
Rome
Movie filmed in New York City, with police detective Buddy (Roy Scheider) investigating who killed his partner. Chase sequence is superb, from which I took most of these screen shots. Many VWs being passed, or parked. Buddy chases the antagonists in his grey 1973 Pontiac Ventura (brand version of Chevy Nova) who are driving a "midnight blue" black 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville 4-door sedan. Baddies are Bo and Moon (played by actual stunt driver Bill Hickman who also drove the black Dodge Charger in the "Bullitt" car chase; and Richard Lynch). IMO Buddy's engine sound has been partially dubbed in from Bullitt's Mustang from that movie's car chase, complete with engine shifting pauses despite the Ventura being an automatic (!?). Here are many of the Beetles seen during the car chase. I saw several more, but could not get clean screen shots of them.
1. 2 Beetles on Riverside Drive on west side of Manhattan, with Buddy charging through the turn in his Ventura.
2. Same location as 1, looking north; with yellow Cabrio heading southbound in distance. The blue Beetle at the end is a '72 Super. Bridge in background is the George Washington, connecting Manhattan to Fort Lee, New Jersey.
3. Beige '68/'69 Beetle parked at left. The Grand Ville is about to ram through between the police cruisers to get to the westbound GW Bridge.
4. Red late Beetle on highway. This is the northbound side of the Saw Mill Parkway in Westchester County, coming up on Reader's Digest Road; looking south. I've driven on this section hundreds of times since the late 1970's.
5. Ivory/pale yellow '68/'69 Beetle parked at left curb, Manhattan. This is where the Grand Ville smashes through a wooden barricade into a street where many schoolchildren are playing.
6. Elsewhere in the movie- 2 Beetles in Manhattan.
7. Early 1960's Beetle parked on an Avenue in Manhattan. That's Buddy in the beige coat running across the street.
8. 3 Beetles in Manhattan. Everett B has a similar shot in his gallery in which the (center) Beetle is more

Beetles in "The Seven-Ups" (1973)
1. '68/'69 Beetle in the garage from where the car chase begins. Bo and Moon are rushing out in their Grand Ville; Buddy's Ventura is parked at the curb outside.
2, 3. Blue '70 Beetle driving past on 10th Avenue, heading north. View is from the Grand Ville.
4. Yellow '72 Super Beetle on 10th Ave.
5. Blue '62/'63 sunroof Beetle on 10th Ave.
6. White early '60's Beetle Cabrio on a lateral street.
7. Red '66 or '67 Beetle with blue late Beetle parked behind
8. Grey '64 Beetle parked on Riverside Drive which is on the west side of Manhattan. IMDB trivia mentions that the person diving for protection behind the Beetle was a movie camera crewmember due to the Grand Ville coming so close on the street.
9. 3 Beetles parked on the northbound curb of Riverside Drive.
10. 2 Beetles on 10th Ave.

Hand-lapping board for small parts
Rome
Over 30 years ago I made a simple tool to hand-lap surfaces flat; something you can make in less than an hour for probably under $10. I bought 2 clipboards for 8 1/2 x 11" paper. Back then the cheapest ones were the hardboard ones; nowadays you can also buy plastic ones. Drilled the rivets that held the clip off one of the boards, held the removed clip in place on the first board at the other end from that one's clip, marked the 2 attachment holes, and drilled them in the board. Attached the clip with some 1/4" grip length rivets with backing washers. I went to a HW store and bought a single glass mirror tile that was about 10" square. Slipped that under the two clips, with a sheet of 220 wet sandpaper on top that's also held in place by the two clips. The clips prevent the sandpaper from sliding. Use water or WD-40 as lubricant. The reduced friction usually enables the clipboard to stay in place on the workbench; if it moves I'll hold it with my other hand or use 2 woodworking spring clips to hold the board to the workbench edge. Use 30-40 back & forth sanding movements in one direction, then lift the part and rotate quarter turn and do 30-40 more. Lift up the part, wipe it off with paper towel, and closely observe the sanded area. When you see that the sanding marks reach the various attachment holes and extend around them to the part's edge (arrows), then you know the surface is fully flat. I use this method on many parts, such as cylinder top edges, fuel pump housing surfaces, oil pump housings.

Type 4s, more Type 3 and Karmann Ghias in "The Streets of San Francisco"
Rome
Popular TV show from 1972 thru 1977, shot on location in that city. SF police Detective Lieutenant Mike Stone and Inspector Steve Keller (Karl Malden, Michael Douglas) investigate crime in the city. Many street photos where there's almost always a VW in the background.

1. Silver 412 Wagon in background, "Judgement Day" season 4 episode 19, 1975.
2. Silver 412 4-door Sedan, "Most Feared in the Jungle" S2E14, 1973.
3. Stone and Keller walk past a light blue '71+ Squareback. "A Collection of Eagles", S1E17, 1973.
4. White late Fastback in background, "Legion of the Lost" S1E26, 1973.
5. Bonus: 3 Squarebacks in what appears to be an independant VW repair shop. "10 Dollar Murder", S3E18 1975. IMDB does not list the location.
6, 7. Red late Ghia Coupe, "Most Likely to Succeed" S4E14, 1975.
8-10. Yellow mid 60's Ghia Coupe, upside-down and abandoned. '64+ inner door release, 5-lug rear drum. "For Good or Evil" S3E10, 1973.

Type 2s and Karmann Ghias in "The Seven-Ups" (1973)
1. Beige/white early Bay Window Deluxe parked along 10th Avenue.
2. Blue/white Splittie Deluxe parked along Riverside Drive on the west side of Manhattan.
3. 2 red Bay Window Deluxes as Bo turns northbound onto Riverside Drive. The crudely painted red Opel Kadett parked at left is about to have its driver's door torn off by the Pontiac.
4. Green/white Splittie Deluxe parked on southbound side of Riverside Drive.
5. Beige/white Bay Window Deluxe parked on NB side of Riverside Drive. 3 Beetles in same shot.
6. Red Splittie Deluxe parked on NB side of Riverside Drive.
7. Yet another beige/white early Bay Window Deluxe, parked on NB side of Riverside Drive.
8. Elsewhere in the movie, Bo and Moon hassle a character in the city. Yellow/white ~'71 Deluxe Bay Window in background.
9. White with black top Ghia Cabrio parked on westbound W. 96th Street.
10. Black early 1960's Ghia Coupe parked on NB side of Riverside Drive.
