Engine fire damage - Repairs begin
Semper_Dad
Current status

Accessed whether there was any internal damage from fire or collateral water damage from putting the fire out. No fire or fire damage was apparent at this point.

Engine was stripped down longblock. Most cooling tin was sent off for powder coating. Following components were beyond economic repair:

Generator
Voltage regulator
Fuel Pump
Carburetor

Distributor was sent off to Sparxwerks for rebuild.
New rebuilt carburetor purchased from Volksbitz
Generator, fuel pump, coil, and most of the rubber/plastic pieces ordered from Thingparts.com

Long block was de-greased and cleaned. Then reassembled with newly powder coated tin and ancillary components. A lot of screws, bolts, washers were replaced with new ones.

Managed to lose one woodruff key for the generator pully so still waiting for that part to come in to complete that part.

Distributor Rebuild
Semper_Dad
Distributor after rebuilding by Sparxwerks.

A steel replacement lubrication cover was installed as the original white plastic one melted away.

Distributor was in really good shape after good cleaning. Pivot plate was nice and had no wear. Needed the new replacement lead guides installed. The body of the distributor also cleaned up nicely.

Mainshaft fiber washers were replaced with new Bosch. The mainshaft was polished on the upper and lower side. Stripped and re-bright zinc plated the external distributor cap clips, screws, drive dog and it's spring. Installed a good, used and tested German Bosch DVDA vacuum canister on the distributor as well. Provided tune up parts installed. Distributor was run on a Sun distributor machine. It functioned perfectly and the advance curve was right in-spec. Advance and retard curve of the vacuum canister tested. Dwell set.

Distributor Autopsy
Semper_Dad
Autopsy of my DVDA 043 905 205C conducted by Sparxwerks. Distributor was victim of engine fire.

Vacuum canister is bad. You could blow right through it. Pivot points plate has three little lead guides that the plate pivots on. Fire was hot enough to melt them but didn't warp the plate. Plastic spring retainers deep internally are designed for high heat and look fine. Distributor had never been apart before and like all of these 50 year old distributors that have never been restored was found to be pretty filthy, dirty inside it. Distributor will be restored.

Electrical won't be happening till after paint but went ahead and had this printed and laminated up. 2'x3' Poster of Thing Schematic. Will be replacing main harness and everything in the engine bay. Should be quite useful. Probably frame it as art once I'm done with it.

Layed out damaged body panels. Airboxes are fine, rear deck is a bit warped in the middle but opened and closed just fine when mounted to the car.
