Here is a set using a breather front and rear on the case. Each breather uses a separate PVC valve. by using a sand seal on the crank, a vacuum can be created in the crankcase.

This is the raduis where bearing will catch and also shown is the thrust surface on the crank. bearing must turn freely against this thrust surface. Test yours, if it does not, then the bearing is catching on the crank raduis.

Stock vs modified bearing
jamestwo
Bearing on left is stock, on the right, the sharp raduis on the bearing has been rounded off to match the raduis on crank. This was done carefully with a bearing knife.. Stay OFF the main bearing surface, just increase the radius, or really just remove the sharp edge shown.

Here is how you can set up the end play out of the case. Just slide your bearing on crank, attach flywheel and measure gap between flywheel and bearing. Much more accurite IMHO then setting it up in the case. You can recheck it after the motor is built and then you will be sure that the crank is not hitting anything, and that the number one bearing is not moving.

In the picture, the gap is shown much larger, typically it will be around 0.30-40.

MAKE sure number one bearing is all the way against the crank. Some times the raduis on the crank will hold the bearing off. This will give you a false reading and also could cause the motor to sieze. The bearing raduis needs to be modified to match the cranks.
