My pickup in 2000
rachel
My pickup was newly back on the road, legal and mostly reliable. We went from Monterey, CA to Jerome, AZ via Phoenix. After a long weekend in Jerome, we went to Albuquerque, NM for about 10 days where the old pickup was pretty typical in relative age and crusty appearance, so different than in Monterey where he struck out oddly among luxury $UV$, coupe$ and $edan$. Here he sits peering out of my friend JP's shop in Albuquerque.

My friend B is a self-proclaimed recycler and made drivable some of the sorriest VWs I've ever seen. The 1951 sunroof had rust and collision damage; its pre-B fate was to become parts, clips and scrap. It went to live in Oregon and was driven home from with a 36hp/bias ply combo from Monterey, Calif on Interstate 5.

What we have here are two 83mm 40-horse big-bore pistons, both number 3. The shinny one is from the new Mahle kit, part number 111 198 057 A83. The dark one is from the old kit, too worn for reuse. As you can see there are significant differences, mainly in the skirts.

Here a picture of the 40-horse case, number 3535714 that the new Mahle 83mm big-bore pistons are for. The difference in skirt length results in number 3 piston locking up against the flywheel side of the case. The distributor for the kit, part number 111 198 057 A83, informed me that the case needs to be clearanced a few thousands... or a quarter inch depending. Tragically I had already assembled the engine this far. Once this clearancing has been done, the case will have to come apart, everything will need to be cleaned and a new gasket kit purchased before reassembly. I certainly wish the distributor had let me know beforehand.

Mark stood on his heavy-duty rack and took this picture at the half-way point. Ty's Doka, sporting a South African grill, and my single cab, sporting its factory primitive design, sit as brothers. The truck drivers stuck together which was fine by me because my truck was the freakish primitive one with simple rear wheel drive and they let me feel like I belonged... with them. It's nice to have a group with which to feel affinity.

The Doka travels up hill at a slow and consistent pace, enjoying a steady power of four-wheel drive. My rear wheel drive single cab had to wait at the bottom until the way was clear and then charge the hill, bouncing and jumping over the ruts and holes like a rabbit. In this manner, he followed and led his younger brothers to the top.

The Buses and Balloons show in Albuquerque is a great place for people. Here (L to R) Max is angry, Jon looks smug about some personal secret, Philip and Catherine (P&C) take a matching break and Roger sends a disapproving glare at some young ruffians and their lowered VW. Note speed and oil temps along with the fact that this was on a straight stretch of road and not downhill. Despite this display of poor treatment, the big engine (1600 single port) didn't blow up and got an average of 32.6 miles during the 1300 or so miles driven.

While most of the ghias enjoyed a leisurely treffen cruise Saturday, four of them drove less leisurely (hard in fact) and had no pit stop for a photo opportunity. One ghia had an emergency side of the freeway fuel pump replacement and three ghias stopped to offer assistance. Sadly the poor ghia only made it as far as the lunching place before refusing to travel further. Here Bill smiles unshaken and philosophical about the events of the day.

Bus Snobs at BITS 3

Jon and Roger talk trash about the buses in attendance at Buses In The Shop 3. They relax next to Roger's non-'67 bus, The Jalopy, a 1960 single cab. One day maybe someone will look at this picture of The Jalopy and think it is in outstanding condition and why the heck are those fellas in the way of an otherwise perfect view?!

My 1956 single cab looks pretty small next to this big head sculpture.

I replaced the incorrect (not round, non-screw terminal) dimmer switch with a correct (thanks Everett) dimmer switch. Here is a picture of the players: my '56 truck, incorrect switch, correct switch and bitchin' barefoot pedal. Sure, the floor mat would have covered the sins of using an incorrect switch but I knew it was there and was unable to use my truck's high beams.
