Over the Top header and muffler
rowame
This is a very interesting exhaust system for a T3. I bought it 3 yrs ago from VeeDub Parts Unlimited in CA, but it seems that others (such as Kymco) now offer this system. My original muffler had rust holes in it so it needed replacement. This system had a conventional T3 header, but the single quiet muffler sits on top of the exhaust mounting flange. The muffler is completely hidden from view behind the apron, and only the tip comes out the original location. The installation went well, but there is only about 1/2" clearance from the top of the muffler to the bottom of the air intake rubber bellows. I had my system aluminized for longevity. This shot is taken with the rear of the car slightly raised (2x6 ramps) and me crouching on my knees.

Vintage Postcard from Austria
rowame
On a free weekend during a business trip 2 years ago, I was travelling in southern Austria and came to the Felbertauern tunnel. This tunnel is along highway 108, south of the ski resort of Kitzbuehel, and in the next valley to the west of the famous Grossglockner Alpine Road. It was too late in the day to south thru the tunnel but I stopped at a small gift shop there and found this postcard. It shows the south entrance to the tunnel on a beautiful sunny day. I estimate it was printed in the late '60's, as it looks like there is a big-bumper Beetle on the far left. The Fastback in the foreground would also be from the late '60's as its decklid logo is "1600 TL". The license plate is German but I don't know what town "NU" stands for (it is not Nuernberg = Nuremburg as that is a single "N"). Here the Fasty is stopped on the south side of the tunnel (heading north) at the toll booth. Speed limit thru the tunnel is 70km/h (approx. 44mph) and no passing allowed. The Fasty's driver is chatting with a fellow dressed in typical Lederhosen from the region. The two mountains in the distance are the Roter Kogel (2945m = approx. 9720 ft) on the left, and Dichten-Kogel (2843m = approx. 9380 ft) on right. The white Beetle in background looks like a '64.

1977 Beetle during drive to Michigan- May, 2000
rowame
My green '77 Beetle trailing a group of vintage VWs from Canada and the NorthEast across the province of Ontario Canada. Here the group is leaving the Woodstock Rest Area along Rt 401. The dreary weather would clear up as we headed west to the US border at Port Huron, Michigan. In Canada, the "Exxon" brand is still named "Esso".

1977 Beetle during drive to Michigan- May, 2000
rowame
My green '77 Beetle leads a group of vintage VWs from Canada and the NorthEast into the USA at the Port Huron, Michigan US/Canada border crossing. Most of the early Beetles behind me are members of the DKF (Der Kaefer Fahrer) club, with nothing more than 25 or 36hp engines (OK, so maybe some are enhanced with an OKRASA unit or a Judson). Here, we are near our destination of VW's HQ in Auburn Hills, MI for the annual vintage VW meet. On the drive back home, some of us switched cars for a period to appreciate the ways of a quarter-century of vehicle changes!

1977 Beetle semi-custom
rowame
My '77 standard Beetle, factory color Lime Green Metallic (repainted). I've owned car since 1992. The previous owner had installed black 8-spokes, nerf bar bumpers, and had the small round blinkers set into the "horn grill" opening of the front fenders. All fenders and the front hood are fiberglass. I opted for a more conservative look, and installed the "big" '75 bumpers, relocated the blinkers into the bumpers, added the driving lights, and ran 5.5" VW SportBug wheels (with 195/65 tires) in back, and 5.5" Porsche 914 wheels (same look but different offset) with 185/65 tires in front. Ghia front discs, T3 rear drums. F&R HD sway bars. Handles like a slot car (at least for a VW)! Current engine is a mainly stock 1600 with Kadrons. Shown here in May, 2000 at the VVWCA Michigan Chapter meet at VW HQ.

'77 Beetle cruisin'
rowame
My stock-color Lime Green 1977 standard Beetle has been modified alot since it was new. The previous owner installed fiberglass fenders and front hood, Scat seats, adjustable front beam, front discs and type 3 rear drums, as well as a very strong 2110cc engine. Not long after I bought the car in '92, the engine developed a crack in one of the main bearing saddles (very low oil pressure) so I took it apart and bought a new case from GeneBerg. Reassembly awaits... I fitted the stock '77 bumpers, '72 taillights, SportsBug rear wheels and Porsche 914 front wheels (same look and width but different offset), 185/65 tires in front and 195/65 in rear. With its front and rear HD sway bars it handles like a go-kart! Currently has a stock 1600 with Kadrons. Body is solid and has excellent heat. I've driven it from southern NY to Michigan and back twice with no problems. Will install a moderate 2-liter over the winter.

'70 Ghia GTV coupe
rowame
This fine-looking Ghia was fitted with 4 1/2" SprintStar wheels and 165 tires, as well as the "GTV" badge behind the front fender opening. Was also fitted with an Empi wood-rim steering wheel, 8-track in-dash tape player and a short Hurst shifter. Engine was a stock 1600. The color was the factory-offered orange; the dash paint was original.

Car was built after an article on the GTV Ghia in "Road Test" magazine from around 1971. The GTV equipment was a special "package" offered by EMPI/Economotors in Riverside, CA at the time.

Group of DKF VWs leaving Ypsilanti
rowame
The DKF (Der Kaefer Fahrer = the Beetle driver) club had a good turnout of vintage VWs that were driven hundreds of miles to this meet. Cars from states including Iowa, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Maine, and Ontario Canada. Here we have a black '57 Beetle (from Toronto area), a dark blue '53 (NH), burgundy '50 (ME) and '49 Hebmueller (NH) driving along Washtenaw Ave. to get to the highway. The stone Ypsilanti water tower is in left background.
