Metal Shaping: Image showing bulking up of material while making a dome.
theKbStockpiler
Metal Shaping: Image showing bulking up of material while making a dome.

If a flat piece of metal is bent to try to make a convex/dome shape, metal must be shrunk. Bulking up occurs because the distance of the edges are getting closer together as the metal is bent down around the out side circumference.
Red dots represent locations of where force is to bend metal. Top 2 images force is going down and bottom image force is going into the page.

Edit: Maybe a better explanation would be that if the outside circumstance is reduced and the hence so is the diameter of the outside to meet a smaller diameter, the access metal will bulk up. The extra material is going to be formed between all of the red dots.

Image and explaination of how a dome/convex shaped is formed

I'm learning how to shape metal myself right now so it's the best time to pass the information along so others don't have to start from square one.The entire post won't fit here so If you want to read it go to STF Specialty Forums Tools/Tricks/Techniques/Shop Theory to read it. Thank you to the Samba for hosting the image.

Sheet Metal Forming Diagram
theKbStockpiler
This is a image for thread but I'll post the text for it here as well if it fits.

If two bends exist on the same panel and they try to occupy the same area they will conflict because either shrinking or stretching is required. This is what happens when making a dome is attempted. You can try this with just a sheet of paper by bending the opposite sides on both the top/bottom and right/left at the same time. There is excess material created because the edges are getting closer together.

If the outer circumference is shrunk down as the lip is bent all is well and that is the only change of shape the panel will incur. However if the outside is not shrunk the panel will bow along where the bend occurs on the part that we want to be flat. This does not happen with the first part bent down because the extra material is not forced against other (competing) metal build up.Once there are two bends forcing their excess metal against each other ,it will either shrink some, buckle or bow the part we want to stay flat.

This is just cut out from a regular cheap piece of steel (A36) but at 3/16" the 20 gauge sheet metal is no match. For a something to start and learn with it is just fine.

Flux-core sheet metal welding : 22 gauge butt seam
theKbStockpiler
If flux core welding on 19 gauge and thinner, you have to just tack weld and or do a series of tack welds to make a stitch. Does not mater if you are butt welding or fillet (overlap) welding.

Green Area: Zero gap series of tack welds.

Yellow Area: Gap welded 21 gauge. First deposit a little metal to build it up and then do your tack weld. Keep wire directly in between both pieces.

Red Area: Done the same way as with mig and a huge gap where you start your weld on the last weld. Flux has to be brushed off every time.

I have had a tig for a week and I have already run through a 80cf bottle of argon practicing on sheet metal. Tig welding is not cheap. I'm going to trade up to the 120cf bottle.
