Inside some ball joints, VW (Lemförder) and Meyle
tristessa
Since I had to destructively remove them from the trailing arms for replacement, I took some pictures of the inner construction for comparison to each other and to the current offerings.
One last shot of the '07 Meyle joint, plastic sleeve around the shank below the ball to approximate the shape of the OE VW/Lemförder shank in that area .. but the Lemförder was steel there. This detail was hiding in the grease/schmoo and I didn't notice it at first.

Circa 2007 Meyle, Clockwise from top-ish is the socket cup, the cap and the shank. Schmoo definitely started life as some sort of grease.

Circa 2007 Meyle joint. Odd plastic cage with some shmoo inside that looks like dry earwax, and has the consistency of dry earwax. Must have been grease at some point.
Joint had nearly 1/4" vertical play in the socket

2007-ish era Meyle ball joint, failed in around 9 years in the driver's upper position. There was almost 1/4" vertical play in this thing and some definite clunking going on. Not sure what the hole next to the joint is about, guessing it's from the removal technique that Trafton used in '07. Goes about 1/8" in.

Shank and ball of the OE VW/Lemförder ball joint. Joint was overly sloppy but this still looks nice.

VW and Audi logos in the cap of the OEM ball joint. Unfortunately the Lemförder logo got wiped put by the grinder, it was in the area above my thumb.

Inside the presumably 1977 OG balljoint, made by Lemförder, Clockwise from top, thick steel cap, ball joint shaft/shank, plastic socket/cup. Plenty of grease in there, the boot was still in good shape and survived removal to perhaps live another day.

Compressor bracketry
tristessa
Adapting a Sanden-style compressor to the OEM VW/Zexel compressor bracket. Settled on using the CCW-rotation SD7V16 compressor from an '01-03 VR6 Eurovan. It has three mounting ears, allowing installation with the oil fill/drain plug at 90 degrees from vertical as allowed by Sanden and presumably the companies making replacement Sanden-type compressors.
