I'm not so good at pics or keeping up with this stuff but thought I'd give it a shot. Here's some pics of my 55 oval project that's been ongoing in some fashion since the '70s when a guy gave me the bug to get it out of his drive way. I got it running at was my daily driver until 1983 when the crash box tranny gave up the ghost. The guy who was supposed to rebuild it disappeared with my parts so I picked up a "68 swing axle and began my education on what's what with these old bugs...It has been through a relocation and has sat around the past 30 years until I finally got my shop in shape to do something with it. The Samba has been a gold mine of experience and education in figuring things out...So here's some pics of the project...I'm about to get into the body repairs, pan/ tranny are pretty much done.

Trying out some 16s on Luigi
Stock Steve
"Luigi," our October 31, 1956 Ghia--who turned 55 a few days ago--swapped his PF Flyers (155R15 Vredestein radials on repro Porsche 356 wheels, 15" diam. x 4.5" width)--just for kicks, for a relatively primitive set of wheels/tires that I had done up for our '50 Bug several years ago: 16" diameter x 3" wide stock Bug wheels, with Coker/Firestone 5.00/5.25x16 whitewalls. Not correct for the car, for sure, but still a fun exercise, and of course a photo-op as well. We drove Luigi the Ghia in our town's Veterans Day Parade today also, and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

restojohnny's project 55 pre a porsche coupe
restojohnny
well had a few of my pre a guru buddies come over yesterday to laugh at my 55 pre a project and they loved it. They pointed out my accessorized dash. Apparently I have quite of few very very rare accessories on my pre a. Can you spot them ??? 4 original gauge hoods, beck fuel gauge , stork celsius and farenheit gauge, benzine maplight, washer bottle and windsheild water squirter's not to mention the full circle hornring and a few other rare item's. Geezer's Herbie gets new engine and pulled over by Police.
Geezer
2165 Engine for Herbie. I have been working out the little "Bugs" that all new engines have. Spent an hour looking into why no fuel was getting to the Webers. Pulled the fuel tank and found a pinched fuel line. Then following the folks who sold me the chromoly pushrods I set them to "0' lash. This caused the fuel to stand off above the Weber's. I went back to my Old School days and reset them to .006". I drove Herb for the first time today. Man does this little engine has get up and go. The Rancho transaxle is shifting great. Herb love 2300 rpm...then POW hang on above that. I have yet to take the car on the freeway to see how 4th gear works. Oil pressure is good and the temp has not reached 170 yet. I talked to Lloyd Moser last week and I will try some of his jetting ideas. The Redline carbs came with 3-60 idle jets and 1- 55 idle jet. All the A/C jets were 176. Should be 200. The main gas jets are 1.35's and should be 1.60. I bought or should I say I got took on the purchase of a Weber carb book from a famous Buggie outfit. They charged me $60 for a $16 book, out of date with the info it provided. Save your money and ask those who know like Lloyd or CB. I will be getting front disc brakes cause I am going to need them. The sounds this little car makes are something. There are the Webers, cooling fan, rockers, A-1 muffler and CB fuel pump all singing their song. Got followed by one of my city finest but he just waved and didn't pull me over. I guess it is my gray hair? Good thing as I had no seatbelt. I am changing the rear tires from 185's to 205's. Seems the 185's turn 850.3 turns per mile where the 205's turn 816. Less turns more speed topend and I can stay in 1st gear longer. Now I can start out in second easy.
Week later. Today I got pulled over by 2 Upland police cars. They wanted to take pictures. Kind of cool instead of tickets, when I was young, now they want photos of my Herbie.

Rollin slow and throwing sparks in my T34 hoodride. It's a long haul from San Jose to Sacramento when you've only got a half inch of ground clearance! haha

IRS conversion in the rear, 1700 Type 4 motor, 14 inch bus wheels, Toyo 195/45/14s on the front, 205/55/14s in the back, stock bay window bus muffler, and big rig LED tail lights to top it all off. A bunch of good shit thrown into a rusty, worn out package.

Beetle Takes 2nd Place
roymann
After 2 years of welding, hammering, scraping, bleeding and cussing I finally finished my 73. I entered my first big car show 2 weeks ago and took 2nd place in the Custom Division beating out a slew of 32 Ford Coupes, 55 Chevys and Custom Camaro's. And I haven't even buffed out the BC/CC yet. Tee Hee! Bug Power lives! Click on my other pics to see the complete step by step restoration. Peace on ya!

My 67 deluxe being road tested at highway speed for the first time since being lowered. We took advantage of the 50+ degree January day in Ohio to work out some bugs. All went well, but glass would have been very helpful at 55 mph.

Late '55 Sunroof

No accident damage all around. Front fenders, rear fenders, hood, decklid, front apron, doors and glass are all original to this Bug. Rear apron was swapped out in favor of a '61 pee-shooter style to accommidate the '61 exhaust. It appears to be done professionally, no complaints here, just grab an H when it pops up.
