The funny looking bar with the big hole in it is an EMPI tool and available through them. It is used both on the flywheel to hold it while you tighten up the gland nut or on four or five wheel brake drums to remove the axle nuts. I found the square tubing from China would bend, so had my brother weld on a metal plate , using 5/16 or 3/8 inch thick plate and about two feet long. It's a solid piece of steel and now, will not bend with any amount of torque you use. The other parts are commonly available 3/4 drive breaker bar, a cheater pipe for leverage and impact socket size of 1-7/16 to remove frozen on gland nuts and axle nuts . This will not break with over 400 ft. lbs. of torque. Works on all Beetle gland nuts and axle nuts. Together, both do the job. I found my impact gun would not remove some of the frozen on gland nuts or axle nuts. You can use different size impact sockets for larger Bus axle nuts or aftermarket gland nuts which are bigger than the normal 36mm or 1-7/16 inch size.

Bought Cheap 67' Bug last year
67vbug
Got this bug last year... MANY PROBLEMS!!! one, engine had 11 thous of play even with calibration of shims! Rebuilt now. Tranny had long axles but short splines. had those replaced with long/long axles/spindles. Got a IRS freeway tranny which is a freeway flyer and changed out the carrier in the axle housing to accept swing axles. Many people say it cant be done but it works!!! Body didnt have bolts holding it down under rear seat. Frnt beam replaced because smashed leaves in tube and rounded center part. Replaced steering box with one that works! Many things has been done so far. A major concern is alot of bondo in the front clip.OUTCH! About 2 inches thick!!! I am going to form the metal back and only put a small thin layer of body filler the right way! I will have many more pics of engine being built in he process, tranny swap from IRS to Swing, etc. If you have any questions, please send a comment!!!

thanks!!!

IRS or Swing axle E brake cable conversion alternate method
jeremyrockjock
I cut through the guide tube down to the cable without cutting the cable and slid that portion to the inside of the backing plate bracket. The piece I cut was about an inch long. This was done with 63 and older syle cables.

74' baja in progress
dan3
This is my 1974 Baja which is powered by a 1600cc engine. It use to be a really nice car until I got ahold of it. When I baught the car it was all stock and the engine was frozen. I mainly got it for the "no rust" purpose which I found out later on didnt matter scince I would transform it into a baja.

Anyway, $1000 for the car and a frozen engine. I had it rebuilt which cost me $1800 so now I'm up to $2,800. Well, to make a long story short I chopped the body and installed a fiberglass kit($10 used on ebay, w/out r.fenders). Next I replaced the heater boxes with J-tubes for a header/stinger system. Scince I did that my engine required that I replace my stock 34pict carb with a weber 32/36 progressive carb. I havent gotten the carb tuned yet so it wastes alot of gas. It's nowhere near finished........I'd say that so far i have spent $3500 total on this fine automobile.

I plan on finishing my car by Feb. of next year. Changes to my baja will consist of the following: 3" suspension lift all around, new white spoke wheels, rancho shocks for rear and adj. coil overs for the front, new balljoints, bushings, tachometer, roofrack and some other stuff I cant think of right now.

My car currently has a double tube front bumper that has been bolted on the top bolts of the front axle (for better clearance) and rear HD tube bumper with skip plate. These changes are not shown in picture, incase you didnt see.....I'll post another pic once its finished.
