40 horse (before...recently pulled from running car)
smitty24
This '65 engine, recently pulled from PO's car.
Literally everything that COULD be wrong with VW motors all in one package of fun!! ALL WRONG AND EVERYTHING NEEDING REBUILD AND REPLACED.

Used as one of his backup engines. PO is a local VW shop owner and self proclaimed "mechanic." No idea how he makes money. Told me it was a "great" and "extremely reliable" motor. Fired it up on test stand for me, ran but poorly. Incorrect valve lash (beat up valve tips and destroyed rockers), rusted and seized intake and exhaust bolts/nuts. Missing tins, no flaps or thermostat, too large header and leaking exhaust, stripped threads, BAD generator, new FLAPS universal regulator that wouldn't work, wore out 28 pict, wore out vac advace dizzy and mismatched to carb: gutless and only yielding 10* of full advance! Leaking gas out of carb and gaskets, fuel pump pushing 6-7 psi, broken pump flange, disgusting and neglected oil, oil cooler seals leaking, bent fan, severely clogged heat risers....BY FAR THE WORST MOTOR IVE HAD TO REPAIR!

Brake booster hoses on '71 Bay
Pogel
So I changed out the hoses as the PO had the wrong diameter hoses and the engine stalled on braking. Probably the vacuum collapsed the hose. Anyhow, this one on the front of the servo goes up into the vehicle body. Is it just a pressure equalizer line?

'64 Ghia Coupe
Rome
Taken early 1995, about a year after I bought it out of Rhode Island. I installed a near-stock 1600 dual-port with Kadrons, and a Beetle dual-quiet pack muffler (right edge of mounting flange is vertical).

Other details:
-Rear bumper aligned level
-Early 1960's Bus VOLKSWAGEN tailgate emblem to replace the missing original Ghia one. The bus emblem is longer and slightly taller, but has the same font. The left two attachment pins lined up with the existing holes in the engine lid.
-Firewall sound insulation panel covered with roofing paper to hide numerous tears in the panel. Glued on. Side panels to the rear of the wheelwell humps also covered with roofing paper.
-Battery relocated to under the rear seat, as in a Beetle. Makes much more room for dual carbs.
-Battery tray to the right of the engine was rotted. I had a Beetle battery tray welded in, which has the same overall size as the Ghia's built thru Dec. 63. Good match to the left indent panel. Car was already painted orange by POs; I found a Krylon spray can which was a perfect match to repaint the engine surround panels after the patching.
-Non-original engine lid; car color is polar blue.
-'67 Beetle reverse light mounted under the bumper using the Beetle bracket, just turned upside-down. Light is activated by a Bus reverse switch at the speedometer cable.

Blew the plug out of Number 4 replaced both heads and found this..
Have PO receipt for rebuilt 1.8L engine.. well maybe on average. It looks like one 1.7L and one 2.0L head.. and a really crappy machining job on both.

Lowlight Engine Compartment
Exaktaphile
I'm keeping the 40hp that came with the car. Instead of cutting the front and rear tins when the engine was installed, the PO broke the spot welds on the bottom corners of the firewall and hinged/pounded it forward 2 inches. To accomodate the rear tin they cut the weatherstrip channel in half near the latch and hammered the strip back until it cleared the 40hp tin. This made the deck very uneven so fettle, fettle, twist, bend, weld... 1957 lowlight Ghia.

My 2nd 1967 Bug
Piperbill
After a 10 year hiatus, I came across this beauty for sale in my country neighborhood. It had a complete body-off paint job several years ago and had been garaged for most of the past 30 years. The PO put a 1973 1600 engine in it a couple of years ago and it only has a few hundred miles on it. Finally... I'm a bug owner again!

Looks like the PO broke the stud off and then didn't drill straight when he retapped it for a smaller stud.
