40 horse (before...recently pulled from running car)
smitty24
This '65 engine, recently pulled from PO's car.
Literally everything that COULD be wrong with VW motors all in one package of fun!! ALL WRONG AND EVERYTHING NEEDING REBUILD AND REPLACED.

Used as one of his backup engines. PO is a local VW shop owner and self proclaimed "mechanic." No idea how he makes money. Told me it was a "great" and "extremely reliable" motor. Fired it up on test stand for me, ran but poorly. Incorrect valve lash (beat up valve tips and destroyed rockers), rusted and seized intake and exhaust bolts/nuts. Missing tins, no flaps or thermostat, too large header and leaking exhaust, stripped threads, BAD generator, new FLAPS universal regulator that wouldn't work, wore out 28 pict, wore out vac advace dizzy and mismatched to carb: gutless and only yielding 10* of full advance! Leaking gas out of carb and gaskets, fuel pump pushing 6-7 psi, broken pump flange, disgusting and neglected oil, oil cooler seals leaking, bent fan, severely clogged heat risers....BY FAR THE WORST MOTOR IVE HAD TO REPAIR!

Turbine Time - 2
Exaktaphile
The wooden box will be nearly a 10 inch cube. Parts used in these pics:

3 - 1/4 x 5" bolts with washers/nuts. Snug them up until the gasket seats well but don't overtighten and collapse the turbine housing.
3 - 3.5" pieces of 3/16" PVC for spacers. Adjust length according to your motor/gasket thickness.
1 - piece of an old electrostatic computer mat for the gasket between wood and fan. Anything will work but be sure the fan doesn't suck air from inside the box.
1 - 1 1/4" PVC coupler for air intake, epoxied into a 2" bore in the wood. The I.D. of this size coupler is a little bigger than the fan intake.

The motor is now back in today. It was taken out February 17th 2013 to send the body off to paint. Also installed the Eberspacher intake and exhaust pipes. Ive been waiting to install that foam gasket for at least four years now. Enjoyed every minute. Last touch was that screw in the front headliner panel. Dahm thing sagged there. So I glued a block to the roof then set a genuine Westfalia screw to hold up the center - worked like a charm. BAM!

I recently needed to pull over and address some running issues and loss of power. I cleaned my throttle body as much as possible and replaced the gasket meeting the intake manifold. (mine was very worn and leaking which I believe was the problem)

Single port 1500-1600 intake manifolds
VWTECHEDITOR
Recently, I've had problems with non-VW single port manifolds. In both cases, new aftermarket manifolds were installed and could not be made to seal properly at the head. One is on an engine that I built for myself, and the second was on an engine a friend brought to me to correct a running problem. Check out the difference in the connection end and the build quality! If some type of special seal/gasket was available, the aftermarket might be usable...
Long story short, a used genuine manifold is better than a new aftermarket.

Art LeBrun
vwtecheditor

P.S. Anyone else run into this problem?
P.P.S. Ran across yet another one of these manifolds at a shop where I know the owner. Same problem; poor running and won't idle.

type 1 1600 dual port vacuum leak possibilities
asiab3
Possible locations include, with color coded references:

Green, most common that I observe:
Throttle shaft bushings - requires re-bush.
Dual-port intake boots (left and right)- replaceable with engine in, but I prefer to remove engine to replace.
Manifold vacuum port - there's a vacuum nipple with a rubber sheath back here on some manifolds. Those rubber sheaths crack and leak air.

Orange, leaks I occasionally observe:
Distributor vacuum can leaks - If the retard side is hooked up and blown, your engine will not idle. It will also run lean and hoooot. If the advance side (only side hooked up in this picture) is leaking, the engine will idle but run lean when you are cruising.
Vacuum ports on carbs - Again, these rubber caps can leak. If you can get the engine to idle cold, listen very carefully for sucking/whooshing around here. Plug the holes with your fingers and see if it picks up.
Brake booster leak - firmly press the brakes, see if idle changes. disconnect and PLUG the hose, see if idle improves.
Left side manifold vacuum port - another rubber plug. Some manifolds don't have this port.

Red, leaks I have not personally observed but have read about:
Base of carb - there's a gasket here. Some rebuild kits include new gaskets that aren't fuel-proof.
Intake manifold to head connection - There is a gasket here, and if the manifold side pieces are not torqued to spec they could come loose or leak.

(Please use your X-ray vision to see through the tubes and clutter to exactly the parts I am describing…)

altitude adjuster

exploded altitude adjuster ~71

A - end cap, "breather" for vacating vacuum
B - gasket
C - diaphragm controlled valve & vacuum connection. there is a spring holding the bottom slotted "pin" against a valve on the top - looks like an itty bitty intake valve. the pin is threaded and is adjusted by rotating the bellows "E"
D - diaphragm
E - bellows with adjusting slot at bottom, pin through the top that locks to the pin in "C"
F - end case

appears the diaphragm can be replaced - I used a piece of bicycle inner tube.

engine prep--the inside of the engine is tinted with mineral oil deposits, which will clean up with full synthetic oil.--I broke 2 intake manifold bolts off due to water port/gasket leaks that rusted the bolts. I'm glad I broke the manifold water pipe bolts initially. It forced me to remove the manifold and this will now be corrected.

this was one of the first turbo set ups i built for my self.engine spects were 74x92 power sleeved stock311b rods 74berney bergman crank ground and machined by my freind john. 11/32 dowel mate( NO WEGEMATE). older moon cam ecf to k10 108LC 1.4 scat rockers mag case 10mm studes. my vwaudi 041s nonwelded 42x37 heads scat dual springs. my custom one off 1/1/2 turbo header thick flange( NO GASKETS )and( NO LEAKS ) turbo was a rayjay eb60 then in the end i ran a ef70. carb was a holly3310 vac second. i would run the road demen now if i were to do it again. custom one off long alium intake built by jeffd and jier valley. comp was 8.01 i always ran race gas in the car because i always had the wastegate screw on kill dident want to take a chanse getting waxed on the street by a moter cycle or what have you. it was a deffent powerifull and relible combo and it did not leak a drop and the engine had been reved to 10.000 in the burnout. best et with dunlop street radials was 12.00 at 120mph. wheelspin and small wheel stand to boot never ever ran slicks. drove it to the traqck and drove it home. round trip 50 miles.what a ride lets just say the perfect engine for this little car. jeff d.
