While the grille fit pretty decent considering, the body had to be narrowed about 3/4 of an inch and the front of the car body cut back about 4 inches. I also cut relief cuts into the floor section in the nose so the body could be narrowed

I literally cut the nose off of the whole front body section. I reinstalled the front hood drip moldings. I used a long threaded rod to pull the two body sides narrower and then glassed the nose cap back in 4 inches farther back.

The original Mercedes grille actually worked perfectly by sitting it over the lip of the original from hood drip rail.

Finished restoration 1983.5 Westfalia
plummerdesign
Yep. You are correct most 1983.5 Westfalia's did not have a skylight. That was one of the first things I did to this hot mess. Then the flocking, new tent, and powdercoated hardware. Even the DeltaSix plastic trim was restored and refinished. Looks and works as-new. Funny how many busses have tents that are full of holes and pop top flocking that is black with mold. This had that.
Yuk.

Fake vs Real
Spezialist
Left side was purchased at a big box website recently to compare to the one Iíve had (R) since about 1990,
The left (new) is about 12 thousandths bigger in diameter, which would mean the maker used an original to make the mold to cast it.
Kinda night and day in production and quality.

Scanning a low light to reproduce the mats
lajs57
You need: The original body-chassis model in great condition, the scanning equipment, the related software and, if possible, a set of OEM mats or a hand-made model that can be refined with a wax mold. Then the production mold design and implementation follows. Finally the manufacturing method needs to be tested to produce a high quality reproduction.
