Subaru Power Windows in a 78 VW Bus
Daverham
This is the motor/ift assembly from a 2005 Subaru outback. This is a work in progress. Search my threads to see if it really worked. We're not there yet, but it's looking good.

Rare VW “Synero”
radar5667
Spellcheck people. My buddy once asked me what a 1986 VW “Synero” was. He had seen a local estate sale nearby which included a “rare 1986 VW Synero” going up for a no reserve auction. I was suspicious and figured it might be a Syncro. Turns out I was right and there was only one other bidder present because nobody searches the internet for Syneros. This was a couple years ago and we were fortunate that day that the internet failed to spellcheck and autocorrect “Synero” for Syncro so thanks to a one letter error in spelling, “Big Stinky” joined our family that day for an exceptionally good price. Big Stinky the tin top is a loyal and trusty member of our family now. You never know when or where it might be your lucky day. Keep looking and be ready when it is your day.

No OEM fit A/C Condenser Solved
gETo
I wanted to put A/C in my 1975 Super Beetle. It was clear that finding workable OEM parts was like trying to find lips on a chicken. Solution: Retrofit universal subsystems. I will chronicle my journey starting with my most difficult item. Under the front vented fascia is a series of oval louvres. The underside is approx. 24” X 6”. Of course, NO ONE has a Condenser that size OR, if they do, they can’t tell you because all they only have stats on “fitment by application”. The next step was to find a “make to order” outlet. After dizzying searches and calls, fortunately, I found American Coil in Gardena, Calif. Speaking with a very cordial gentleman, Mr. Carlos Cuevas, [310-515-1215] He gave me an acceptable quote {In particular, since no one else would!} I have inserted a copy the plan and his resultant build from my specs. I also provided them 4 - 6” X 6” 12V fans {google - American Volt} so the fit could be done by experts, form only allowed 3 per spacing, still seems enough. Also, when it arrives I will insert photos of the finished product. Since I’m not an A/C tech, I will leave the end fittings to them.
As to unit fitment, I presume all 1973-1979 Super Beetles are eligible.
When I’m done, all the Installer should need is wiring, R134a and hoses.
In a greater challenge, that would be paradoxical even to Mr. Spock, … the Compressor ‘pedestal’.
Of all systems: new, “kit” or contrived, the mounting pedestals I’ve seen {brackets} all appear haphazard, misfit, jury-rigged or piecemealed together. Unacceptable. I don’t want to open the engine lid and everything looks awesome except the AC Compressor mounting. I’m taking my contour gauge and seeing a CNC machinist this AM. To Be Continued…

Custom LED lights
Auggie West
His and hers, over the bed reading lights. I put these in a few years ago, very happy with how the look and work. Blue for dim light or white for reading. Something like 3watts each, super low draw. Found on Amazon under search for ‘marine lights’

All in all, 5 states visited, viewed/passed on 4 other Westys, 2 pre-purchase inspections for vans I did not purchase, 1 deposit forfeited....and then an unexpected turn of events. I’m 1500 miles from home and a dude in Utah emails me and by chance, I’m only 10 miles away from him. The van I’ve been searching for found me in Utah. It did not get away.

VWs in the town dump in "The Getaway" (1972)
Rome
Doc McCoy (Steve McQueen) and his wife Carol (Ali MacGraw) have been running from the police in various getaway cars after robbing a bank in a small Texas town. With a police cruiser slowly following in an alley at a distance, they ditch their car and jump into a large trash bin that is not empty. The garbage truck happens to interrupt the police search, loads the bin and drives off. The next morning the truck drops its load into a large disposal dump. They seek cover in a half-cut Beetle shell.

In the background behind Doc you can get a glimpse of a white upside-down Ghia; looking closer it's a lowlight!

This is one of 8 or 9 VW Buses (they started as Standard Microbuses and Kombis) that my father was responsible for purchasing for Burgundy between 1957-60, when I was a student there. I found this photo on a Google search. It came from thesamba.com but I can't find the original page. Who posted it, and when? Where are these vehicles now? Have any been restored? Thanks!

Hi was clearing out some things and came across this. Not sure what it came from but looks brand new. One suggestion is it is a windscreen mounted search light but that's only a wild guess. Made by Hella but don't know what era. It has an on off switch, the unit swivels, seems to be made from a bakelite type material and a rubber type seal round the glass lens. Any help on what it was used for and an estimation of value of the lamp would be super. Just go easy with me if I have done anything wrong as have never posted on any forum before in my life so this is totally new to me. Just really need some help from some knowledgeable person who might be interested in these "vintage" lamps. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Cab Divider Curtain
Boesen
Made one for our 79 a few years ago after some measurements provided by Kenneth Mitchell (PaintedBus). Helps isolate the heat up front while driving in the fall and early spring. Helps tremendously. Decided to make one for our 68 which we drive year round now. While heat output is less in out 68 it still helps. Basic thick Moving blanket and a clear HW shower curtain. Some basic internet search on sewing in a vinyl boat window and couple hours of cutting, measuring and sewing is all it takes.
